NPL 2024: Sohail Tanvir Rekindles Memories of IPL Brilliance - A Glorious Record That Stood the Test of Time

NPL 2024: Former Pakistan pacer Sohail Tanvir recently added another feather to his illustrious T20 cap by becoming the first bowler to claim a five-wicket haul in the Nepal Premier League (NPL).

Playing for Chitwan Rhinos, the 39-year-old left-arm seamer brought his A-game and delivered a scintillating spell of 5 for 21 against the Kathmandu Gurkhas on Monday (December 2). His incredible effort helped restrict the Gurkhas to 111/9 in 20 overs.

This goes to show his enduring brilliance even after calling it quits from international cricket in March 2023. Known for his unique bowling action and sharp variations, the paceman has been a force in T20 cricket across various leagues worldwide.

Sohail Tanvir's magnificent IPL Record that remained for more than a decade

Sohail Tanvir’s exploits in the Nepal Premier League inevitably draw parallels to his super iconic performance in the inaugural season of the IPL in 2008. Playing for the Shane Warne-led Rajasthan Royals, the Pakistani etched his name in history with a jaw-dropping spell of 6 for 14 against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

This performance remains one of the finest in IPL history and was pivotal in Rajasthan Royals' dominant campaign, culminating in their only IPL accolade to date. It is worth mentioning here that his impressive bowling figures of 6/14 remained unbroken for 11 years.

Several bowlers tried to break Tanvir's IPL record over the years. During the second edition of the IPL, the Indian legend Anil Kumble came close by registering figures of 5/5 against Rajasthan Royals. Lasith Malinga had a memorable outing in 2011, taking 5 wickets and bowling a maiden over against Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), but fell one wicket short.

Adam Zampa matched Tanvir’s six-wicket tally in the 2016 edition but conceded five more runs, finishing with 6/19 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. It wasn't until IPL 2019 that West Indies paceman Alzarri Joseph shattered the record, claiming 6/12 for Mumbai Indians against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Tanvir's T20 resume is really impressive, with 389 wickets to his name in the format. He was also the first-ever recipient of the IPL Purple Cap. The Pakistani accounted for 22 dismissals in 11 matches to help the Royals become first-ever IPL winners.
