NZ vs SL 1st T20I: New Zealand Stuns Sri Lanka with Dramatic 8-Run Victory

By MyKhel Staff

NZ vs SL 1st T20I: In a nail-biting contest at Mount Maunganui, New Zealand staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Sri Lanka by eight runs in the first T20I. The hosts now lead the three-match series 1-0 after turning a seemingly lost game into a triumph.

It was a stellar all-round performance. Batting first, New Zealand found themselves in deep trouble at 65-5 by the 10th over. Sri Lanka's Binura Fernando and Wanindu Hasaranga caused early damage with figures of 2-22 and 2-30, respectively.

However, Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell orchestrated a counterattack with a stunning 105-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Mitchell smashed 62 off 42 balls, while Bracewell contributed 59 from 33.

This lifted New Zealand to a competitive 172-8. Bracewell's sixes against Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana highlighted their resurgence. Despite a strong finish by Sri Lanka's bowlers, the duo's effort gave the hosts something to defend.

Sri Lanka seemed poised for victory after openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis shared a 121-run stand. Nissanka's career-best 90 off 60 balls and Mendis' 46 set the stage for a comfortable chase, with the team needing only 52 runs from 40 deliveries.

But Jacob Duffy had other plans. His game-changing 14th over saw three wickets fall, including both openers and Kamindu Mendis, reducing Sri Lanka from 121-0 to 121-3. The visitors never recovered, losing eight wickets for just 38 runs.

Late strikes by Matt Henry and Zak Foulkes sealed the deal, with Nissanka dismissed in the penultimate over. Sri Lanka's inability to capitalize on their strong start led to their downfall, as no other batsman managed double figures.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner praised Duffy's 3-21 spell, calling it pivotal to the victory. Sri Lanka's skipper Charith Asalanka admitted the middle-order collapse cost them the game. As the teams prepare for the second T20I, New Zealand holds the momentum, while Sri Lanka must regroup to avoid further heartbreak.
