NZ vs SL: Latest Mumbai Indians Star Bevon Jacobs Set for International Debut in Sri Lanka T20Is

Explosive young batter Bevon Jacobs, recently signed by the Mumbai Indians (MI) for IPL 2025, has been handed his first international call-up for New Zealand. Jacobs will feature in the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka.

The series will start on December 28 at Mount Maunganui. Jacobs, 22, has been turning heads with his powerful batting displays in domestic cricket. The South African-born player represents the Auckland Aces in New Zealand's domestic circuit.

He recently earned his spot with standout performances in last year's Super Smash, where he scored 134 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 188.73. New Zealand selector Sam Wells expressed excitement about Jacobs' potential.

"He's a promising player with a lot of talent, and we're looking forward to exposing him to international cricket. He's clearly got a lot of power with the bat, but he's also shown in the longer formats that he has a decent technique and temperament," Wells said.

Mumbai Indians' Scouting Success

Jacobs' inclusion in the Blackcaps squad further highlights the sharp scouting by the Mumbai Indians, who secured him in the IPL 2025 mega auction for ₹30 lakh. Known for nurturing talents like Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, MI has high hopes for Jacobs as a finisher.

Jacobs' exploits during a warm-up game against Sri Lanka on December 23 also caught the eye, as he smashed a quickfire 16-ball 39 for the New Zealand XI. His power-hitting abilities make him an exciting prospect for both New Zealand and MI.

Mitchell Santner begins his stint as New Zealand's full-time white-ball captain with this home series, which includes three T20Is and three ODIs. The ODI leg, starting January 5, will serve as the Blackcaps' final preparation for the Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

Experienced players like Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, and Matt Henry return to the squad after missing last month's Sri Lanka tour. Meanwhile, youngsters Zac Foulkes and Mitch Hay, who debuted in Sri Lanka earlier this year, are set to feature in a home series for the first time.
