ODI World Cup 2023: England's Crucial Need for All-Round Improvement Against Sri Lanka to Salvage World Cup Campaign

By MyKhel Team

England's World Cup campaign has been a complete wreck, with plenty of batting and bowling downtime. But on Thursday, when they take on another struggling side Sri Lanka, they may have one more chance to pull themselves back to calmer waters.

Like their opponents, the reigning champions have two points from four games and are ranked ninth overall.

ENG vs AFG 600

Although a victory here won't put them much ahead of the competition, it might give them a little extra incentive to go up against Australia and India. Yet even the kindness of mathematics, which is currently supporting their dreams, will vanish if they lose to Lanka.

England's batting order needs to be strengthened, and their hitters in particular need to produce, if they want to avoid coming close to an early departure. With its short boundaries and pitch-aiding runs, the M Chinnaswamy Stadium is the most suitable location for them to do it.

The last time these two teams played here, Australia and Pakistan combined for 672 runs. England's batsmen will be anxious to emulate their performance against Bangladesh on October 10, when they managed 364 for 9 at Dharamsala.

Their worst nightmare thus far in this tournament has been that none of their hitters, with the exception of Dawid Malan and Joe Root to a lesser degree, have been able to find their range. The crushing defeat by South Africa and the loss to Afghanistan still feel like scenes from a horrible dream.

Captain Jos Buttler, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, and Liam Livingstone, among others, had a lot riding on them, but none of them have lived up to expectations.

The most disheartening of them all may have been their all-rounders' malfunctioning, as they were instrumental in England's white ball cricket run.

Woakes, Ali, Curran, and Livingstone were the four all-rounders they had at the beginning of the tournament, but after three games against South Africa, none of them were included in the playing 11. Ben Stokes was a purely offensive player.

Such a radical alteration in the pattern reveals the England camp's general indecision.

Their bowling is a complete mess if their batting is aimless.

With eight wickets, Reece Topley led England in wicket-taking in this event; however, a broken index finger will keep the pacer out of action for the remainder of the World Cup.

Leg-spinner Adil Rashid, who has taken six wickets so far and has the best Englishmen economy rate of 5.18, is now their most reliable bowler.

Even though they defeated the Netherlands by five wickets in their previous game, Sri Lanka is still in a shambles, which should give England some solace.

In four games, they have lost young pacer Matheesha Pathirana and captain Dasun Shanaka to injuries. Yet, because those two weren't exactly lighting the stage on fire, it doesn't even feel like a loss.
If England was lacking direction on multiple fronts, Sri Lanka is challenging them closely. Try this out. Since they had a like-for-like pacer in travelling reserves Dushamantha Chameera, they brought in seasoned Angelo Mathews to replace Pathirana.

Although Sri Lanka's stingless bowling is their biggest problem, it appears that there has been a serious brain fog. They let up 428 runs against South Africa, 345 to Pakistan, and 215 to Australia in 35.2 overs.

After reducing the Netherlands to 91 for 6, the Lankan bowlers showed generosity by enabling them to reach 262. In that regard, they may be concerned about giving the struggling England batters a second chance.

The top order batsmen for Lanka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Kusal Mendis, and the two century-makers, Pathum Nissanka and Charith Asalanka, offer a glimmer of hope, though.

Lanka can at least put England under strain and possibly win if they can take advantage of the bowlers' usual carelessness.

The shocking 20-run victory against England they achieved four years ago, which included Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva, and Kusal Perera, may give Lankans some much-needed confidence.

Thus, when two teams with a great deal of shared destiny square up, another classic may be in the works.
