Ollie Pope is confident that Ben Stokes will allow him to lead in his own style when he steps in as England captain during the all-rounder's absence. Stokes, who sustained a hamstring injury while playing in The Hundred earlier this month, will miss the three-Test series against Sri Lanka. Despite his injury, Stokes will be present in the dressing room to offer guidance if needed.
England aims to build on their 3-0 victory over West Indies in July, where Pope excelled with a sixth Test century and two half-centuries. The 26-year-old vice-captain has already sought advice from Stokes but feels prepared to take on the leadership role for the first Test. "It is still Stokesy's team and if I want to lean on him, I can, but I think he will let me do my own thing. He has said he is happy to do that," Pope stated.

Pope mentioned that Stokes would be watching and discussing strategies with Test coach Brendon McCullum. "He will be watching and chat with Baz [Test coach Brendon McCullum] so I can have those conversations in the intervals if I think something needs to change," Pope added. He also highlighted how well Stokes managed the bowlers and plans to continue with similar messages but delivered in his unique way.
The upcoming series against Sri Lanka poses a challenge, but England remains focused on their performance. "We don't underestimate any of the teams that come over here," Pope remarked. He acknowledged Sri Lanka's experienced players but emphasized that England's primary goal is to play their best cricket and aim for a 3-0 series win.
Pope expressed confidence in his ability to read the game well and noted that he often shares the same mindset as Stokes. "I think I read the game fairly well and Stokesy and I have often been of the same mindset," he said. He also mentioned having support from teammates like Joe Root and Harry Brook, who have great cricketing minds.
England has a strong track record against Sri Lanka, having won their last three Test series against them—one at home and two away. However, they were defeated by Sri Lanka in 2014. Pope stressed the importance of focusing on their game plan and delivering a good performance throughout the series.
"We're all behind you, Popey," tweeted England Cricket on August 15, 2024.
The first Test between England and Sri Lanka is set to begin on Wednesday at Old Trafford.
