Auckland, March 25: It was an emotional exit from ICC World Cup 2015 for South Africa. There were tears at Eden Park as New Zealand knocked them out in the semi-finals yesterday (March 24).
And one of the men responsible for it - Grant Elliott understands the pain of losing and he revealed he felt "quite sorry" for Dale Steyn and his team-mates. (De Villies, Morkel in tears)
South Africa-born Elliott smashed Steyn for a six on the last second ball of the match to put New Zealand in the final. Following this blow, Steyn sunk to his knees on the pitch as Elliott raised his arms in celebration.
Soon after, Elliott gave his hand and lifted Steyn and consoled him. Reflecting on that moment, Elliott said he felt sorry for the bowler. (Full text: De Villiers on WC exit)
"I think you have to feel compassion, humble in victory, humble in defeat. It's part of what I am. I felt quite sorry for him (Steyn), I felt quite sorry for a lot of the South African guys for losing the game," Elliott, who remained unbeaten on 84, said. ('Shame' D/L played a part: Elliott)
"It could have been us, it could have been me sitting there having missed the last two balls and I would have been pretty gutted, as well, along with 40,000 people in the stadium, I'm sure. Yeah, just felt a little bit of compassion towards him. It means a lot to them. Obviously they've never made a final, and we wanted to just as bad as they did. Yeah, that's what it was all about," he added.
Chasing a revised Duckworth-Lewis target of 298 in 43 overs, the Kiwis won with 1 ball and 4 wickets to spare.
