One Dream, Countless Sacrifices: How Uma Kashvi’s Family Sacrifices Paved Her Way to WPL History
New Delhi, Oct 29: At 15, Uma Kashvi has made history by becoming the youngest player signed in the Women's Premier League (WPL). But behind the Karnataka all-rounder's ₹10 lakh contract with Delhi Capitals lies a remarkable story of family sacrifice, relentless training and thousands of kilometres travelled to keep a cricketing dream alive.
According to a report by The New Indian Express, Kashvi's selection has brought immense joy to a family that has spent nearly seven years building her future in cricket, often putting personal ambitions and professional priorities aside.

"Genuinely, so happy," a jubilant Kashvi said after learning about her selection. Celebrating with her teammates and family, the teenager recalled the emotional reaction to the announcement. "We were just screaming. My uncle cried," she added. Kashvi surpassed Deeya Yadav, who was 16 when she was signed last year, to become the youngest player picked in the league.
An Uncle's Commitment, A Family's Unwavering Belief
One of the biggest forces behind Kashvi's journey has been her uncle, Vijay, who recognised her potential while watching her play at home. Determined to nurture that talent, he gradually made cricket the centre of his life, even leaving his full-time IT job to take up part-time work and accompany her to matches.
His commitment has been extraordinary. Vijay has travelled to more than 500 matches, while Kashvi's mother, Vijitha, an IT professional, has attended over 400, frequently managing office meetings from the stands. Her father, Praveen Kumar, also joins them whenever possible.
The sacrifices began early. At eight, Kashvi started playing alongside boys, often getting limited opportunities during matches. Her training routine was demanding, with early-morning runs, fitness exercises, school, and evening cricket practice.
Vijay recalled bowling around 180 deliveries daily during an intensive training period, alongside extended throwdown sessions to sharpen her batting.
The family's dedication extended beyond the field. Vijay chose to put personal milestones on hold to prioritise his niece's career, while the family adjusted its living arrangements to make training more accessible. When Kashvi joined NICE Cricket Academy on Bengaluru's outskirts, Vijay stayed nearby with her while her parents remained at their home in Bellandur.
Vijay acknowledged the support of his sister-in-law, who continued working in a demanding IT management role while attending matches and meetings from cricket grounds.
Kashvi's journey has also benefited from her school's flexibility and the guidance of coaches Arjun Dev and Kiran Uppoor. She progressed through Karnataka's age-group teams, captained the Under-15 side and earned opportunities with India's Under-19 team.
Known for her powerful hitting and energetic presence on the field, Kashvi is now being considered for the Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh next year.
Her WPL selection marks a significant milestone, but it is only the beginning. For the teenager and the family that has invested years of effort, time, and sacrifice in her development, the next chapter promises even bigger opportunities.
