Dhaka, June 12: Bangladeshi Cricket Board's (BCB) chief selector Faruk Ahmed on Thursday took an indirect dig at coach Chandika Hathurusinghe over the decision to field four spinners in the ongoing Test match against India at Fatullah.
According to a report published in Bengali daily Anandabazaar Patrika (ABP), Faruk said the selectors don't want to interfere in the decision of picking the XI but personally he felt Bangladesh missed the trick by playing just one fast bowler in the match.
He said Bangladesh has no dearth of pace bowlers and questioned the decision of not playing more fast bowlers in a placid wicket, the report added. According to Ahmed, Bangladesh could have made some inroads through reverse swing with the old ball.
The hosts failed to pick a single Indian wicket on the first day of the Test match as the visitors ended the day at 239 for no loss with Shikhar Dhawan hitting a hundred and his partner Murli Vijay nearing his ton.
The second day of the Test was washed out.
Coach Hathurusinghe, a former Sri Lankan international cricketer, was criticised for the decision in the country's media.
The chief selector also expressed his disappointment over the exclusion of Rubel Hossain, who was the best of the Bangladeshi bowlers in the World Cup played a few months earlier.
Though the team management said Rubel was still recovering from an injury, Ahmed trashed the viewpoint, saying the player wouldn't have been picked for the squad had he been injured, the ABP report said.
Mohammad Shahid was the only fast bowler for Bangladesh in the Test while Shuvagata Hom, Shakib Al-Hasan, Taijul Islam and Jubair Hossain were the four spinners.
