PAK vs BAN 2024: Shan Masood loses his cool and confronts umpire after controversial dismissal against Bangladesh

PAK vs BAN 2024: In a tense moment during the fifth ball of the 7th over of Pakistan's innings, Shan Masood found himself at the centre of a controversial dismissal, an incident that took the cricket fraternity by surprise in the first innings of the Test opener against Bangladesh at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi.

When Shoriful Islam pitched the red cherry at the right line, the ball just nipped back in from outside off. To which, Masood decided to defend it in the first place but what followed next was a decision that left many, including the batsman himself, questioning the fairness of the call.

The sitch unfolded when the ball seemed to pass the left-hander’s bat and then a spike showed up on UltraEdge technology. The third umpire made up his mind to make a decision upon witnessing the conclusive evidence, thinking that there was a clear spike on UltraEdge.

However, in reality, the spike was on the frame only after the ball went past the bat. The third umpire was of the notion that Masood had edged the ball and the decision went against his favour.

On the other side of the coin, Masood wasn't convinced at all as he truly believed that the spike happened after the ball had already gone past his bat, suggesting he did not nick it. In addition, any possibility of a Leg Before Wicket (LBW) was ruled out as the impact was outside off in the first place.

Despite all these uncertainties, the third umpire decided to give Masood out and the review went in favour of Bangladesh, and it was paceman Shoriful Islam who was confident enough to push for the review and it did work for them somehow.

However, from Masood’s perspective, this dismissal seemed unjust because it was clearly evident that the technology didn’t provide clarity which only raised more doubts because a spike after the ball passes the bat does not prove an edge. The spike that occurred could have been a noise from the ball hitting the pad.

The Pakistan Test captain was totally unhappy with the decision and had a discussion with the on-field umpires before he frustratingly made his way back to the dressing room after making 6 runs. It feels like Bangladesh got lucky here this time, benefiting from a call that was not clear-cut and many netizens think that it's 'not out'.
