PAK vs ENG: Joe Root creates History, becomes first player to reach massive WTC milestone

By MyKhel Staff

England star Joe Root created a piece of history in the ongoing first Test against Pakistan on Tuesday (October 8).

Joe Root etched his name in the annals of cricket history by becoming the first player to amass 5000 runs in the World Test Championship (WTC).

Root achieved this remarkable milestone by scoring 32 runs off 54 balls, including two boundaries. Prior to this match, he was just 27 runs short of this monumental achievement and has now reached a total of 5005 runs from 59 matches. Following Root in the run tally are Australia's Marnus Labuschagne with 3904 runs and Steve Smith with 3484 runs, respectively.

For India, captain Rohit Sharma has amassed the most runs in WTC, scoring 2594 runs in 34 matches.

Joe Root is on the brink of surpassing another significant milestone as he is only 39 runs away from overtaking Alastair Cook as England's highest run-scorer in Test cricket. The 33-year-old currently has 12434 Test runs and is the 6th top-scorer in the history of the game.

The significance of Root's contributions can be seen in the context of England's batting lineup, particularly in their response to Pakistan's hefty score, highlighted by centuries from Salman Ali Agha, Abdullah Shafique, and captain Shan Masood. At Stumps on Day 2, England were 96 for 1 after Pakistan's massive 556 in the first innings.
