PAK vs SL, World Cup 2023: Meme fest after Kusal Mendis hits 65-ball hundred following Imam-ul-Haq dropped catch

PAK vs SL: Pakistan's never ending love with fielding goof ups continued in their second match of the World Cup 2023 at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad on Tuesday, October 10. Imam-ul-Haq was at the centre of the fielding mishap this time.

On the fifth ball of the seventh over from Shaheen Afridi, in-form Sri Lanka batter Kusal Mendis slapped a delivery straight towards Imam-ul-Haq at backward point. The Pakistan star was caught day-dreaming as he dropped a sitter.

Kusal Mendis was batting on 18 off 17 at that point. The dangerous wicketkeeper-batter went on to score a 65-ball hundred in the match. After Pakistan dismissed Kusal Perera in the second over, Mendis joined forces with Pathum Nissanka first to forge a 102-run partnership to lead Sri Lanka's recovery.

Mendis, who scored 76 off just 42 balls against South Africa in Delhi on Saturday, forged another century partnership with Sadeera Samarawickrama for the third wicket. The dropped catch did not only prove costly for Pakistan, but also sparked a meme fest.

In their warm-up match against Australia ahead of the World Cup 2023, Mohammad Wasim and Mohammad Nawaz came running into each other after Marnus Labuchagne guided a Haris Rauf delivery towards deep backward square leg (between Wasim and Nawaz). As the two fielders avoided a collision between themselves, the ball crossed the boundary rope.

Sharing a clip of a mix-up on X, veteran India opener Shikhar Dhawan wrote, "Pakistan & fielding never ending love story." Notably, Pakistan cricket team are famous for their hilarious fielding howlers. There have been several instances when Pakistan players have had terrible mix-ups before conceding a boundary or dropping a catch.

Pakistan managed to win their first match against Netherlands by 81 runs after getting bundled out for 286 in 49 overs. However, the dropped catch of Kusal Mendis has caused major headache for Pakistan and Sri Lanka are looking all set to pile up over 300 runs on the board.
