Usman Tariq, a spin bowler from Pakistan, has become a focal point in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 due to his unique bowling style.

Tariq's unconventional approach has baffled several prominent players in the shortest format of cricket. Australian Cameron Green and South African Dewald Brevis are among those who struggled against his bowling. Brevis was dismissed by Tariq on just his second ball in T20 international cricket.

Controversial Bowling Action

The controversy surrounding Tariq's bowling centres on the 15-degree elbow flex limit set by the ICC. This rule is challenging for umpires to assess accurately during matches. Additionally, Tariq's pause during his delivery stride has been a topic of discussion among cricket enthusiasts.

Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed commented on Tariq's long pause at the crease. He noted that it disrupts batters' concentration, making it difficult for them to anticipate whether a fast or slow ball is coming. This element of surprise leaves batters uncertain and often leads to their dismissal.

Impressive Performances

Tariq's rise in T20 cricket has been marked by significant achievements. He took a hat-trick in Rawalpindi against Zimbabwe, securing 4-18 in a tri-series match. In just four T20 internationals, he has claimed 11 wickets from 88 balls.

His inclusion in Pakistan's 15-man T20 World Cup squad was expected, given Sri Lanka's pitches favour spin bowlers over fast bowlers. Tariq's journey to international cricket wasn't easy; he faced scrutiny for his bowling action during the Pakistan Super League but was cleared after testing at Lahore's National Cricket Academy.

Biological Explanation

Tariq explained that his arm bends naturally due to having two elbows. "I have got this tested and cleared," he stated. "Everyone feels I bend my arm and all that. My bent arm is a biological issue." His unique physical condition contributes to his distinctive bowling style.

In addition to domestic success, Tariq excelled in the Caribbean Premier League. Playing for Trinbago Knight Riders, he became the tournament's second-highest wicket-taker, showcasing his effectiveness on an international stage.
