Pakistan Cricket Faces Uncertain Future After Champions Trophy Debacle With Fans & Sponsors Losing Interest - Report

By MyKhel Staff

Pakistan's cricket reportedly faces an uncertain future with fans, advertisers, broadcasters and sponsors likely to lose interest following the team's shoddy performance and exit from the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025.

Currently hosting their first ICC major event since 1996, the Pakistan team missed out on advancing to the Champions Trophy semi-finals. And as per a report in PTI, this may reduce fans' interest in cricket in Pakistan.

Pakistan cricket set for uncertain future

After losing to India and New Zealand in the Champions Trophy, it is said that Pakistan's cricket business will suffer significantly, according to a member of the Pakistan Cricket Board, who spoke to the media about this.

"We are guaranteed hosting fees, our share of ICC revenues including ticket sales, but there are other issues like people losing interest in the mega event, broadcasters showing half-filled stadiums etc. And the biggest worry is despite the craze for cricket here, it may not be easy to sell Pakistan cricket as a brand in future," news agency PTI cited a PCB source as saying.

There are already accusations that hosting cricket matches in Pakistan is not profitable. Now, with the Pakistan team facing defeats even in international series played on home soil, it could further diminish overall interest in cricket among Pakistani fans.

If Pakistan had won against India, it would have created a positive scenario. That is, fans' interest in cricket in Pakistan would have increased manifold. However, everything has turned upside down following the 6-wicket loss to their arch-rivals.

With the semi-final opportunity lost following back-to-back defeats to New Zealand and India, advertising companies may now be worried. There is also doubt whether fans will attend matches played by Pakistan or other teams in the Champions Trophy.

Since advertising contracts for the Champions Trophy series have already been signed, these issues are not visible now. The impact will become apparent when approaching advertising companies for the next Pakistan Super League, according to marketing advertising professional, Tahir Reza.

"It's easy to say cricket sells itself in Pakistan but that is not the case because the interest and attachment of fans, sponsors, advertisers, broadcasters is all linked to the performances as well," Tahir said.

"If the team does not perform, and that too in a high-profile event like the CT, the sponsor wouldn't hesitate to invest his money in other public interest domains like music, entertainment, other sports, etc." Tahir believes that the next edition of PSL will show how much of a negative impact the team's poor show in the Champions Trophy had on the money market.
