Pakistan Cricket: Zaka Ashraf steps down as PCB Chairman

Zaka Ashraf has stepped down as the chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday (January 20).

Zaka Ashraf has stepped down from his role as the chairman of the Interim Management Committee (IMC), the team responsible for overseeing the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

His resignation was made public following the committee's fourth gathering at Lahore's prestigious National Cricket Academy. This move comes shortly before the expiration of Ashraf's latest tenure as PCB chief, which was slated to conclude in early February.

The PCB is yet to make an official announcement regarding Ashraf's successor to manage the board's affairs.

Last November, Ashraf's position as PCB head was extended for an additional three months through a formal decree issued by the board's patron and the acting Prime Minister of Pakistan, Anwar ul Haq Kakar.

Having been initially inducted as the IMC head in July of the previous year, the ten-member panel was tasked with establishing the Board of Governors (BoG) and orchestrating the election for the PCB chairman within a four-month window. Failure to accomplish this within the allotted timeframe led to a subsequent three-month extension for the committee.

During his tenure, Ashraf's leadership was not without its challenges and controversies, including allegations from a committee member of "blatant wrongdoings and unconstitutional decisions."

In addition to Ashraf, the IMC comprises nine other individuals - Kalim Ullah Khan, Ashfaq Akhtar, Muhammad Mussadiq Islam, Azmat Pervez, Zaheer Abbas, Khawaja Nadeem, Mustafa Ramday, Zulfiqar Malik, and Khurram Karim Somroo, each bringing their expertise to the table.

It is to be seen who leads PCB in the upcoming months as the apex body of Pakistan cricket is tipped to announce the successor of Ashraf. Pakistan cricket team are currently in New Zealand for the T20I series.

Their next assignment is the four-match T20 series in England before the start of the T20 World Cup in June. But before that, the PSL Season 8 is on the horizon as the franchise tournament starts on February 17.
