Pakistan Government Clears Team To Play India In T20 World Cup, Ends Standoff

The much-anticipated India-Pakistan encounter in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 has received final clearance after the Pakistan government directed its national men's team to participate in the fixture scheduled for February 15 in Colombo.

The decision effectively resolves a week-long deadlock involving the International Cricket Council (ICC), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

According to an official government statement, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was briefed by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi about the discussions held with ICC representatives and officials from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The meeting addressed concerns related to the tournament and explored ways to reach a mutually beneficial solution.

The statement noted that Pakistan reviewed several communications from cricket boards, including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates, which collectively urged Islamabad to help settle the matter. Bangladesh Cricket Board president Amin ul Islam had also reportedly appealed to the PCB to reconsider its boycott stance. The Pakistan government acknowledged the support extended to Bangladesh, reiterating strong bilateral relations between the two nations.

Diplomatic engagement also played a key role in the resolution. The statement confirmed that Prime Minister Sharif held a conversation with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, during which both leaders highlighted the longstanding relationship between their countries. The Sri Lankan President reportedly requested Pakistan to consider a peaceful solution to the dispute, given the broader interests of international cricket.

Taking into account the outcomes of recent discussions and appeals from several friendly nations, Pakistan's leadership ultimately decided to allow the national team to take part in the high-profile match. The directive officially confirms Pakistan's participation in one of cricket's most watched rivalries, which is expected to draw massive global attention.

The decision is also seen as a significant step towards maintaining stability within the tournament and safeguarding commercial and sporting interests linked to the marquee clash. With the uncertainty now resolved, preparations are expected to continue smoothly for what is widely regarded as one of the biggest fixtures in international cricket.
