Former Kiwi star Mitchell McClenaghan called out a Pakistan journalist after he held New Zealand players participation in IPL 'for money' as the reason for their defeat against West Indies in T20 World Cup 2024 on Thursday.
The Pakistani journalist absurdly said that New Zealand players did not turn up for the national team against Pakistan ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024 and instead opted to continue with their participation in IPL 2024 for money.

"This is What Happens when you Prefer Money over National Duty. New Zealand Had a great Chance to prepare themselves for World Cup 2024 on Pakistan Tour but their Main Players Choose IPL and now they are out of the World Cup," he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Notably, New Zealand travelled to Pakistan for a five-match T20I series ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024. However, the likes of Kane Williamson, Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, Trent Boult, Mitchell Santner, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips and Lockie Ferguson opted to play in the IPL. Tim Southee was also rested by New Zealand.
Pakistan found it difficult to compete even against the second-string New Zealand squad and somehow managed to complete the series in a 2-2 draw. Thereon, they lost a match against Ireland, a series against England and then their T20 World Cup 2024 opener against the USA.
Taking not of the performance of Pakistan team lately, Mitchell McClenaghan shunned and humiliated the Pakistan journalist by saying, "Very poor take. You lost games to our C side, Ireland and the USA."
Pakistan have won just one of their three group stage matches in the T20 World Cup 2024, and stand a strong chance to get eliminated from the first round of T20 World Cup 2024. In case, USA beat Ireland in their last Group A game, or even if the match is washed out due to rain, they will qualify for the Super 8 ahead of Pakistan.
Top two teams from each of the four groups will move to the Super 8 round. India have already qualified for the Super 8 after beating USA on Wednesday.
On the other hand, West Indies became the first team to qualify for Super 8 after beating New Zealand on Thursday. New Zealand are reeling at the bottom of the 5-team table after two defeats in two games. Second-placed Afghanistan have to win one of their remaining two games to move to the next stage of the T20 World Cup 2024. Afghanistan will face PNG on Friday, and West Indies on June 18.
