Pakistan's semi-final hopes were almost done and dusted after New Zealand thrashed Sri Lanka with a five-wicket win at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday, November 9.
The five-wicket win which came in just 23.2 overs against Sri Lanka has almost sealed New Zealand's semi-final match against India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday, November 15.

New Zealand now have 10 points from nine matches. Their Net Run Rate (NRR) is a positive 0.743. Pakistan and Afghanistan are tied on eight points. They face England and South Africa, respectively in their last league matches. Pakistan have a positive NRR of 0.036, and Afghanistan's NRR is in negative numbers (-0.338).
The equation is really tough or say, IMPOSSIBLE for Pakistan. Star Sports experts stated that Babar Azam's side will have to win by a margin of 287 runs against England.
Pakistan will have to win by around 287 runs if batting first. If they field first, they will have to chase the target against England at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata in around three overs or around 284 balls to spare.
That means, Pakistan will have to score over 400 runs while batting first. Notably, Pakistan have never posted a 400-plus target in their ODI history. England, on the other hand, have not conceded over 400 runs in their ODI history.
In another scenario, If Pakistan bat first and score 300, they need to restrict England to 13. If Pakistan bowl first and dismiss England for 100, they need to chase down the target in 2.5 overs. If Pakkstan restict England to 50 runs, they will have to chase down the target in 2.3 overs.
