Pakistan on Thursday announced an 18-member squad for their upcoming T20I tour of Ireland and England. The squad will be reduced to 15 players for the T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and the West Indies next month.
Pakistan squad for T20 World Cup will be announced after the first T20I against England in May 22, the PCB confirmed. Notably, all teams are allowed to make changes to their squad until 25 May, after which any alteration will require approval from ICC's Event Technical Committee.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has rated Pakistan batting line-up as the weakest among top seven cricketing powerhouses. India are second-last in his list.

Mohammad Yousuf confirmed that newly-appointed Pakistan white-ball coach will join the team in England. He said he was involved in all the decision makings. and was in regular tough with assistant coach Azhar Mahmood.

Selectors Mohammad Yousuf and Abdul Razzaq have backed Babar Azam. They said that the star batter is learning and growing as captain. Razzaq also said that with new coaches, and under different regime, Babar Azam has been in constant touch with everyone and is taking suggestions.
Chief Selector has revealed that Saim Ayub was Pakistan's first-choice opener, adding that one between Babar and Rizwan would open with him. He said Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan were the most reliable players in Pakistan team, and one would be needed in the middle-order to anchor the innings.
Hasan Ali has been named as the backup for Haris Rauf. Wahab Riaz confirmed that Haris Rauf will be the first choice for T20 WC spot. He added that Hasan Ali was always in contention but he had a county contract going on.
Abdul Razzaq said that Usama Mir and Shadab Khan were similar type of bowlers, and that was was the reason why Abrar Ahmed was brought in the place of former. Notably, Usama Mir finished as the leading wicket-taker in PSL 2024.
Chief selector Wahab Riaz has backed Usman Khan and said he bounced back after failing in first two outings against New Zealand. Wahab stated that Usman Khan, the second-highest run-scorers in PSL 2024, showed intent and played a crucial knock later in the series. Usman Khan has a promising future for Pakistan, Wahab added.
Wahab Riaz clarified that there was no confusion and disagreement among selectors over players who should feature in the T20 World Cup 2024. He said coach Gary Kirsten has also been part of the discussion, and that players who would travel to the USA and the West Indies have been finalised. Wahab added that delay was just because of fitness issues of few players including Haris Rauf, who is bowling 10-12 overs in the nets now. Wahab expects the speedster to be fit by May 22.
Memeber of selection committee and former Pakistan all-rounder Abdul Razzaq said there shouldn't be any hurry in announcing the Pakistan squad for T20 World Cup 2024 as there was enough time left. He said the fitness of the players will be tested by May 22. Pakistan will play three matches in Ireland before playing the first T20I against England at Leeds on May 22.
Pakistan selector Mohammad Yousufhas defended Pakistan team's performance against New Zealand in the 5-T20I series at home last month. The series ended in a 2-2 draw despite New Zealand fielding a second-string squad. Mohammad Yousufsaid that the result was not in Pakistan's favour but players were rotated for the first time in Pakistan cricket. He said the bench strength would improve, and best combinations would be found this way.

All the players except for wrist spinner Usama Mir and fast bowler Zaman Khan have retained their places from the 17-member squad which faced New Zealand last month.
Haris Rauf and wicketkeeper/batter Azam Khan were sidelined for the New Zealand T20Is due to injuries, while middle-order batter Muhammad Irfan Khan and wicketkeeper/batter Mohammad Rizwan were rested from the two T20Is in Lahore due to niggles.

There are a few fitness concerns in the Pakistan camp. Mohammad Haris injured his shoulders during the PSL 2024 and missed the home T20I series against New Zealand. Azam Khan was missed out on the five T20I matches against due to calf muscle tear. Mohammad Rizwan and Irfan Khan were also ruled out due to hamstring injuries.

"Salman Ali Agha has established himself as a versatile cricketer, proficient in aggressive middle-order batting and off-spin bowling. His inclusion bolsters Pakistan's spin department alongside Abrar Ahmed, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim and Shadab Khan.
"Hasan Ali's selection is attributed to his extensive experience, having featured in 50 T20Is and excelling in bilateral series and ICC Events. His impressive performance in the HBL Pakistan Super League 2024, where he claimed 14 wickets, further underlined his credentials. Currently representing Warwickshire in the English County Championship, Hasan adds depth to Pakistan’s bowling arsenal," the release added.
