Pakistan Super League franchise Multan Sultans owner dies by suicide

Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Multan Sultans owner Alamgir Tareen has reportedly died by suicide at his residence in Lahore's Gulberg area. Alamgir, who bought the PSL franchise in 2018, was 63 years of age.

According to reports in the local media, the reason behind his suicide is still unknown, but the police has said a hand-written note had been found on the site. Multan Sultans CEO Haider Azhar confirmed the news himself, expressing his deep sorrow and condolences to Tareen's family.

"Alamgir Tareen was a valued member of our team and a well-respected personality. We are deeply saddened by his sudden and untimely demise. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this incredibly difficult time," Azhar had confirmed.

Meanwhile, Multan Sultans also released a statement confirming the death of their owner on their official social media platform as they requested to respect his family's privacy.

"It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of our beloved team owner, Alamgir Khan Tareen. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Tareen's family. We request you all to kindly respect his family's privacy. May his soul rest in eternal peace," Multan Sultans tweeted.

Fellow PSL side Lahore Qalandars, who beat Multan in the final earlier this year, also expressed their grief and sorrow over the shocking news, saying they were gutted to hear the news of Tareen's demise.

"Lahore Qalandars management is shocked and saddened to hear about the death of Mr. Alamgir Tareen. This loss leaves a significant void within the cricket community," Lahore Qalandars' statement via Twitter read.

"We offer our heartfelt support to his family and Multan Sultans to navigate this challenging time. May the departed soul rest in peace, and may their loved ones find strength and solace in the memories shared and the legacy left behind."

According to Multan Sultans' official website, Alamgir was "a sports enthusiast who wanted to work towards establishing a solid platform for aspiring sportsmen and women and to provide them with the best possible resources to further develop their skills".

In 2021, Multan Sultan had won the PSL title for the first time after beating Peshawar Zalmi in the final. In 2022 and 2023, they came as close as the final but lost to Lahore Qalandars in both attempts.
