Pakistan vs Ireland: Pacer Joshua Little to Miss T20 Series for IPL 2024; To Join Squad Directly For T20 World Cup

By MyKhel Staff

Pakistan vs Ireland: Irish fast bowler Joshua Little has opted to continue his stint with the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024, foregoing the upcoming international fixtures for Ireland against Pakistan and a subsequent tri-series in the Netherlands.

This decision comes after Cricket Ireland permitted him to fulfil his commitments in the IPL 2024 before joining the national squad for the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies.

Pakistan vs Ireland Joshua Little

Joshua Little's presence in the IPL has been a significant boon for the Gujarat Titans, with his performances bolstering their bowling lineup. As one of the standout young talents in international cricket, Little's continued exposure in high-pressure games in the IPL is seen as beneficial for his development and readiness for the global stage at the World Cup.

Ireland's T20 World Cup squad, led by Paul Stirling, is scheduled to start their campaign with a warm-up match against Sri Lanka on May 31. Ireland finds themselves in a challenging group alongside heavyweights like India and Pakistan, as well as hosts USA and Canada.

Little is expected to join the squad directly in time for the World Cup, bypassing the team's preliminary engagements including three T20Is against Pakistan from May 10-14 and the tri-series involving the Netherlands and Scotland from May 19-24.

The Irish squad for the World Cup sees the inclusion of fresh faces like Mark Adair, wicketkeeper-batter Neil Rock, and legspinner Ben White, who were not part of the previous edition in Australia where Ireland had notable victories over West Indies and England. Conversely, players like Simi Singh, Stephen Doheny, Fionn Hand, and Conor Olphert, who were part of the last campaign, have not been included this time around.

Ireland's head coach Heinrich Malan highlighted the strategic decision to allow Little to extend his IPL stint, emphasizing the importance of his development and the high level of competition he faces in the league. Malan expressed confidence in the selected squad and the breadth of skills they bring to the table, underscoring the team's readiness to compete on the international stage.

"We are entering an intense phase of T20 cricket which will serve as crucial preparation ahead of the World Cup," said Malan. "While these upcoming matches are pivotal, allowing Josh to compete in the IPL supports our objectives of player development and preparation for the World Cup."

As the Irish team gears up for a packed schedule leading into the World Cup, the focus will be on optimizing performance and team dynamics during the preparatory matches, aiming not just to compete but to win, setting a positive tone for their World Cup journey.
