Pakistan's new white-ball captain announcement: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi on Sunday (October 27) named Mohammad Rizwan as the new ODI and T20I captain of the Pakistan cricket team. All-rounder Salman Agha was named the vice-captain of Pakistan white-ball teams.
The Pakistan squads for their upcoming white ball matches against Australia and Zimbabwe were announced earlier on Sunday but the suspense over the new white-ball captain of Pakistan cricket team was kept. A press-conference was held to make the big announcement.

"PCB Chair Mohsin Naqvi will unveil Pakistan's white-ball captain in a media conference in Lahore on Sunday at 3.30pm," the PCB release stated.
Mohsin Naqvi refuses to comment on the captaincy tenure of Rizwan. He says that he was hoping for the current bunch to succeed in Australia and Zimbabwe. Naqvi was responding to a question in which he was asked whether a captain would be judged on the basis of his performance in a series.
Rizwan plays down groupism in Pakistan team. He says that he belongs to only one group and that is 'Pakistan cricket team group'. He promises to put on a fight in Australia, asserting that he hasn't been crowned the king and instead he is now a servant to look after 15 players in the team. Win or lose, Pakistan will fight, declares Rizwan.
Mohsin Naqvi confirms that Fakhar Zaman has been punished for commenting in favour of Babar Azam after he was dropped after the first Test. He adds that the X post in favour of Babar Azam was not the only issue. Naqvi raises questions on Fakhar Zaman's fitness as well. Notably, Fakhar Zaman has been removed from the Pakistan central contracts list, and has also not been picked in any of the four white-ball squads picked earlier today.
Mohsin Naqvi has asserted that selectors have taken a very careful decision to name Rizwan the ODI and T20I captain of Pakistan. He then asserts that chances to fresh talents have to be given to strengthen the team. He said domestic cricket becomes very important for the growth of Pakistan cricket in general.
CONFIRMED! Mohmmad Rizwan is the new white-ball captain of Pakistan. He will lead both the ODI and T20I sides. Salman Agha has been named the vice-captain in both the formats.

Babar Azam is our pride, and players like him come after ages. He communicated and said he wasn't looking to continue as captain. All the negative reports around him are wrong, and he just wants to focus on his game.
Mohsin Naqvi has arrived for the PC with Rizwan and Salman Agha. Aaqib Javed also present.
We predicted that Mohammad Rizwan could be named the white-ball captain and Salman Agha his deput. Looks like our prediction will come true. Latest reports, moments before the confirmation, are suggesting that Rizwan will be named the white-ball captain, and Salman Agha will be the new vice-captain of the Pakistan white-ball team. That means that Salman Agha will be leading Pakistan in the T20I series against Zimbabwe. He will make his T20I debut on the Australia tour.
Exclusive: Mohammad Rizwan will be Pakistan's white-ball captain, while Agha Salman will be the vice-captain 🇵🇰🔥

A total of nine players have been picked in both the ODI and the T20I squads. They are: Babar, Naseem, Rizwan, Salman, and Shaheen, Arafat Minhas, Haris Rauf, Haseebullah and Muhammad Irfan Khan. If this gives any hint, Rizwan is indeed the favourite to be named the new white-ball captain of Pakistan. But because the wicketkeeper-batter has been rested from the Zimbabwe T20Is, a new captain will have to be named for the three-match series. There is also a possibility that a vice-captain is named, and he is asked to take the responsibility when Rizwan flies back home after the ODI leg in Zimbabwe.
Shan Masood-led Pakistan Test team bounced back to register a 2-1 Test series win against England. It was Pakistan's first home Test win since 2021. The two back-to-back wins came after the selectors dropped Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah after the first Test which Pakistan lost by an innings and 47 runs. After the Test revival at home, Pakistan are aiming for success in white-ball cricket. Picking the correct leader at a time when PCB has been accused of favouritism has become crucial. A serious politics in Pakistan dressing room has also been reported. Pakistan are looking for a leader who can change the culture of the team, and bring a positive change in the dressing room. The Champions Trophy 2025 is also approaching and Paksitan are the hosts, and therefore stability in leadership becomes a must.
Shaheen Afridi was named the T20I captain for the New Zealand tour but Babar Azam replaced him before the T20 World Cup 2024. Babar had first resigned from captaincy after Pakistan's poor show in the ODI World Cup 2023. The return of Shaheen as captain is highly unlikely. He has also been rested for the Zimabwe tour alongside Babar Azam and Naseem Shah. Shadab Khan was once the vice-captain, but he isn't even one of the four squads which was announced on Sunday.
ARY News has reported that Salman Agha can be named the ODI captain, and Rizwan the T20I captain. The all-rounder has played 21 ODIs for Paksitan, and is yet to make his T20I debut. His appointment as captain in any of the formats would be a massive surprise.
Mohammad Rizwan is the strongest contender. He is a regular in the ODI and T20I squad, and has proven his leadership skills in domestic cricket and the PSL. But will he be named the captain of both the formats? While Rizwan has been picked in the ODI and T20I squad for the Australia tour, he will be part of the ODI leg only in Zimbabwe. Who will then captain the T20I side in Zimbabwe?
Will PCB name a single captain for the ODI and T20I format, or will they make two appointments separately? Mohammad Rizwan was the frontrunner for the role, but ARY News on Sunday morning reported that two separate captains can be named.
The squads for the ODI and T20I series against Australia and Zimbabwe have already been announced, but PCB kept the suspense over the new captain. There have been numerous speculations over the last few weeks ever since Babar Azam stepped down from the role. The PCB has turned this into an event now. A press-conference to reveal the captain two ours after announcing the full squad is something very unique in cricket. That's Paksitan Cricket for you! Full of drama and action.
Mohsin Naqvi's press conference will start at 3:30 PM in Pakistan, and 4:00 PM IST in India. Another 70 minutes to go, and we will get to know who is the new ODI and T20I captain of Pakistan.
Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi press-conference in which the new white-ball captain of Pakistan will be announced. Let's call it the 'Crowning Ceremony' of Pakistan Cricket!
If reports are to be believed, Mohammad Rizwan is the frontrunner for the high-profile position. But ARY News on Sunday morning reported that two separate captains for the ODI and T20I teams can be named. It was reported that Salman Agha could be named the new ODI captain of Pakistan, while Rizwan could take charge of the T20I team.
However, Mohammad Rizwan has been rested from the T20I series against Zimbabwe. He is part of the ODI and T20I series against Australia, and will also feature in the bilateral ODI series against Zimbabwe, but has been rested from the T20I leg in Zimbabwe. Lahore-born all-rounder Salman Agha has been named in all the four squads.
Babar Azam, who stepped down from the Pakistan white-ball captaincy after the team's horror run in the T20 World Cup 2024, has been rested for the Zimbabwe tour alongside Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah.
