Commentary
Uganda defeated PNG by three wickets in their second match of the T20 World Cup 2024 in Guyana on Thursday, June 6. The historic win was Uganda's first in an ICC event.
Uganda bowlers shine
Opting to bowl first, Uganda came up with a spirited performance to bundle out PNG for 77 in 19.1 overs.
Alpesh Ramjani, Cosmas Kyewuta, Juma Miyagi and Frank Nsubuga picked two wickets each as only three PNG batters could score in double digits.
Uganda batters also struggle
In reply, Uganda also lost four wickets in the powerplay, and were later five down for 26 in 6.3 overs.
Riazat Ali Shah stands tall for Uganda
However, a crucial 34-run partnership between Riazat Ali Shah and Juma (13) put Uganda in control of the run-chase.
Shah was dismissed for 33 off 56 with Uganda needing just three to win from 13.
Uganda script history with first win in ICC event
Kenneth Waiswa swept a delivery fine and ran a double on the second ball of the 19th over to finally script Uganda's historic first win in an ICC event.
With the win Uganda jumped to third spot in the Group C. PNG, who have now lost each of their two opening games, are at the bottom of the five-team table which also includes New Zealand, Afghanistan and West Indies.
