India's Olympic journey began with a two-medal debut at the 1900 Olympics and since then the country has secured a total of 35 medals over 24 Olympic Games that includes gold, silver, and bronze achievements.
To date, India’s best performance at the Olympics has come in the Tokyo 2020 edition. In myKhel's latest series of articles in the buildup to the Paris Olympics, the previous Olympics saw the country register their best-ever medal tally at the Games securing as many as seven medals.

It was defined by some historic feats such as Neeraj Chopra’s gold, the first-ever track and field medal, PV Sindhu becoming the only second Indian athlete to win two Individual medals at the Games, the hockey team ending a 41-year wait, and debutants shining at the global stage.

Ace weightlifter Mirabai Chanu overcame the disappointment of Rio 2016 by lifting a total of 202kg to secure a silver medal in the women's 49kg category.
This was her first Olympic medal, making her the second Indian weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to achieve this feat. Chanu's victory marked India's first medal at the Tokyo Olympics as well.
On her Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, Lovlina Borgohain won a bronze medal in the women’s 69kg category. She assured herself of a medal by defeating Chinese Taipei’s Nien-Chin Chen in the quarter-finals.
Lovlina’s journey ended in the semi-finals where she lost to top seed Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey in the women’s 69kg category.
Badminton star PV Sindhu made history as the first Indian woman and only the second Indian athlete after Sushil Kumar to win two individual Olympic medals.
PV Sindhu clinched the bronze medal in women's singles by defeating China's He Bing Jiao 21-13, 21-15.
This victory marked India's third confirmed medal at Tokyo 2020, surpassing their total from Rio 2016.
Another Olympic debutant brought another medal for India.
At 23, Ravi Kumar Dahiya secured a silver medal in the men’s 57kg freestyle wrestling after losing to twice world champion Zavur Uguev of ROC in the final.
This achievement marked India's ninth silver medal in Olympic history and the second in wrestling following Sushil Kumar's at London 2012.
Ravi Kumar Dahiya ensured his place on the podium by defeating Kazakhstan's Nurislam Sanayev in the semi-finals. Despite trailing 2-9, he made a remarkable comeback by scoring a few points and pinning Sanayev.
After a 41-year wait, the Indian men’s hockey team secured their first Olympic medal since their gold at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
Despite trailing 3-1 at one stage, India staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Germany 5-4 and capture the bronze medal.
This victory marks India's third Olympic bronze medal following achievements in the 1968 and 1972 Games and their 12th Olympic medal overall. It also represents India's fifth medal at Tokyo 2020.
In his Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, wrestler Bajrang Punia clinched a bronze medal in the men’s 65kg freestyle wrestling playoff by defeating Kazakhstan’s Daulet Niyazbekov, a World Championships silver-medallist.
This victory not only made Bajrang Punia the third Indian debutant to win a medal at the Tokyo Olympics but also marked India’s sixth medal at the Games, equalling their best-ever haul at a single edition of the Olympics.
Neeraj Chopra secured India’s second individual Olympic gold following Abhinav Bindra with his victory in men’s javelin throw at Tokyo 2020.
This achievement marked India’s maiden track-and-field medal at any Olympic Games.
Chopra's throw of 87.58m earned him the gold medal, contributing to India’s seventh medal at Tokyo 2020, their highest-ever tally at a single edition of the Olympics.
