Pat Cummins' Baggy Green Mysteriously Vanished Ahead Of WI-AUS Test: Report

In a bizarre prelude to the first Test between Australia and the West Indies, Australian captain Pat Cummins found himself without his newly issued Baggy Green cap, which mysteriously disappeared shortly before the toss at Kensington Oval, Barbados, on June 25. Despite the off-field distraction, Cummins led his side to a dominant 159-run victory.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the cap went missing sometime after a pre-match photoshoot, where Cummins posed alongside West Indies skipper Roston Chase wearing the brand-new Baggy Green.

The Australian fast bowler had opted for a fresh cap instead of refurbishing his original one, which he had worn for 14 years - a move that subtly defied the long-standing tradition of sticking with the same Baggy Green throughout a player's career.

But fate had other plans. When it came time for the toss, the new cap had vanished without a trace, leaving Cummins with no option but to reach for his original, timeworn cap - the one he had planned to retire. The moment drew attention, not just for its odd timing, but also because of the deep sentimental value attached to the Baggy Green in Australian cricket folklore.

This isn't the first time an Australian cricketer has dealt with such a loss. Just last year, David Warner appealed to the public after his cap was stolen along with his luggage. The incident sparked a nationwide search and eventually ended with the cap's return.

On the field, the missing cap didn't affect Cummins' performance. He took three wickets in the match, playing a vital role in Australia's comprehensive win. His efforts were complemented by Josh Hazlewood, who delivered a devastating spell in the second innings, claiming five wickets to rattle the Windies batting lineup.

Cummins made a key breakthrough by removing Shai Hope, the top scorer in the hosts' first innings. Then came a moment of brilliance in the field as substitute Marnus Labuschagne ran out Alzarri Joseph with a pinpoint direct hit from mid-off.

Hazlewood, returning for another spell, dismissed Jomel Warrican before West Indies' tailender Shamar Joseph offered some late resistance. Joseph blasted a quickfire 44 off just 22 balls, entertaining the crowd, but was eventually undone by off-spinner Nathan Lyon. Lyon followed up by removing Jayden Seales with the very next delivery, sealing a comfortable win for Australia.

Reflecting on the bowling conditions, Hazlewood said, "It was just about hitting the right areas time and time again and just being patient."

"There are a few cracks there on a good length and just short of a length, which kept the batters guessing about going forward or back with a few skidding through as we saw," he added.

While the mystery of the missing Baggy Green remains unsolved, Cummins' ability to stay focused and deliver when it mattered most highlights his leadership and resilience. Whether the cap will resurface remains to be seen - but for now, the cricket world has yet another Baggy Green tale to talk about.
