Pat Cummins Fined Despite GT Vs SRH Ending in Just 34.5 Overs After Hyderabad Collapse
Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins has been fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during SRH's IPL 2026 clash against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.
The penalty came after Hyderabad suffered a humiliating 82-run defeat against GT at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Tuesday night.

Interestingly, the fine has sparked debate online because the entire match itself ended in just 34.5 overs after SRH were bowled out cheaply during the chase.
Why was Pat Cummins fined?
According to the IPL Governing Council, SRH were found guilty of a minimum over-rate offence under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct.
Since it was Hyderabad's first over-rate violation of IPL 2026, Cummins received a financial penalty of Rs 12 lakh.
The IPL statement said:
"Pat Cummins, Captain, Sunrisers Hyderabad, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during Match No. 56 of TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad."
It further clarified:
"As this was his team's first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Cummins was fined INR 12 lakhs."
Fine creates debate because match finished inside 35 overs
The punishment quickly became a major talking point because the game itself ended unusually quickly by modern IPL standards.
GT posted 168 batting first before completely dismantling SRH for just 86 during the chase, with the entire contest finishing in only 34.5 overs combined.
That led many fans to question how a slow over-rate penalty could still apply in such a short game.
However, IPL over-rate calculations are based on required fielding timelines and innings-specific regulations rather than the overall match duration itself.
SRH collapse after GT pace attack destroys top order
The defeat itself turned into one of Sunrisers Hyderabad's worst performances of IPL 2026.
After restricting Gujarat Titans to 168 on a difficult batting surface, SRH appeared strongly positioned at the innings break.
However, Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada produced a devastating powerplay spell to completely break Hyderabad's batting lineup.
Rabada removed Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Ravichandran Smaran, while Siraj dismissed Travis Head in a wicket-maiden opening over.
SRH never recovered from the early collapse and were eventually bowled out for just 86.
Pat Cummins admits GT outbowled SRH completely
Following the defeat, Cummins openly admitted Gujarat Titans executed the conditions significantly better than Hyderabad's bowlers.
The SRH captain felt his side perhaps failed to persist long enough with the hard-length bowling strategy that GT later used successfully during the chase.
"It looked like a pretty tough wicket once you kind of hit that back of the length, and they didn't really give us much to score."
Cummins suggested Hyderabad learned too late how difficult batting actually was on the surface.
"Perhaps in our bowling innings, you kind of learn from that, you think maybe we could have held our lengths just a little bit longer."
Pat Cummins praises Gujarat Titans bowling performance
Despite the heavy defeat, the Australian captain credited Gujarat's bowlers for producing elite T20 execution.
"I think they made the most of it, their bowlers, they bowled really well."
Cummins went even further while describing the quality of GT's bowling display.
"That's as good as T20 bowling as you're going to see from them."
SRH still remain strong playoff contenders
Despite the crushing loss, Sunrisers Hyderabad remain firmly in the IPL 2026 playoff race.
Pat Cummins' side still possess one of the strongest records in the competition after winning six of their previous seven matches before the Gujarat defeat.
However, the manner of the collapse exposed vulnerabilities against disciplined high-quality pace bowling - something SRH may now need to address quickly before entering the knockout stages.
