Pat Cummins Joins Unique List Of Captains To Win ODI World Cup Year After Marriage

Pat Cummins joined a unique list on Sunday (November 19) following Australia's 6-wicket victory over India in the ICC World Cup 2023 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Opting to field on a slow track, Cummins led the charge with figures of 2 for 34 in his quota of 10 overs to bundle out high-flying India for 240 before Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne combined to pull off the run chase as the wicket got easier to bat under lights.

With this result, Australia became the ODI World Champions for the record-extending sixth time, and it also saw Cummins join three other captains to win the World Cup a year after their marriage.

Cummins joined compatriot and two-time ODI World Cup-winning skipper Ricky Ponting, former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and former England skipper Eoin Morgan in this unique list. Here is a look at when this feat was achieved earlier:

Captains to Win ODI World Cup Year After Marriage

Ricky Ponting: The two-time World Cup-winning skipper guided his team to their third title in 2003, when Australia defeated India in the final. Ponting won the World Cup in March 2003, a year after marrying his long-time girlfriend, law student Rianna Cantor, in June 2002.

MS Dhoni: The skipper, who led India to the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, guided the national team to another World title triumph four years later, when India defeated Sri Lanka in the final in April 2011, a year after the former Indian skipper tied the knot with Sakshi Singh Dhoni in July 2010.

Eoin Morgan: The Irish-born skipper guided England to the first ODI World Cup triumph following the victory over New Zealand in July 2019, a year after he married his long-time girlfriend Tara Ridgway in November 2018.

Pat Cummins: The latest to join the list, Cummins captained Australia to their first WTC final and sixth title triumph in ODI World Cup in 2023, a year after he married his his fiance and longtime partner Becky Boston.
