Pat Cummins etched his name into the record books on Day 2 of the first Test between Australia and the West Indies in the Frank Worrell Trophy, held at Kensington Oval, Barbados, on June 26. The Australian skipper broke a longstanding record that had remained untouched for 62 years.
During the final session of Day 3, Cummins claimed the wicket of Keacy Carty, which brought him level with Richie Benaud for the most wickets taken by an Australian Test captain. He went one better in the second session of Day 4, dismissing Roston Chase-who was playing a gritty innings of 44-thereby surpassing Benaud on the all-time list.

Chase's dismissal was a crucial breakthrough as the West Indies skipper had steadied the innings and was beginning to guide his side into a potential lead. Cummins' timely strike not only swung the momentum back in Australia's favor but also placed him second among all Test captains in terms of wickets taken-trailing only Pakistan legend Imran Khan.
In addition to this feat, Cummins has now equaled Imran Khan for the second-most five-wicket hauls by a Test captain, with both sitting at nine. Imran leads the chart with ten. While Richie Benaud still holds the distinction for the most wickets taken by a spin-bowling captain, Cummins' dominance as a pace-bowling leader continues to stand out.
Having assumed the Test captaincy in 2021, Cummins has led Australia in 28 matches so far. For comparison, Benaud captained in 35 Tests, while Imran Khan led Pakistan in 48 red-ball games. Under Cummins' leadership, Australia clinched the World Test Championship title in 2023 and made it to the final again in 2025, underlining his success not just as a bowler but also as a leader.
