Vidwath Kaverappa

Vidwath Kaverappa's IPL debut was nothing short of dramatic. He managed to dismiss two key batsmen, Faf du Plessis and Will Jacks, setting the tone for his team early in the game. His ability to swing the ball and maintain a disciplined line and length was evident.

Although a potential third wicket slipped through due to a dropped catch by Harshal Patel, Kaverappa's spell in the powerplay was a clear display of his skills.

Who is Vidwath Kaverappa?

Born on February 25, 1999, in Kodagu, Karnataka, Vidwath Kaverappa has been part of Karnataka's domestic cricket circuit and has quickly climbed the ranks due to his consistent performances.

As a right-arm fast-medium bowler, Kaverappa brings a blend of pace and precision, much like his idol, Glenn McGrath. While he currently bowls in the 130s, he is actively working to increase his speed, aiming to add more firepower to his arsenal.

Kaverappa's journey through professional cricket began with his first-class debut for Karnataka against Puducherry on March 3, 2022. His T20 and List A debuts followed within the same year, showcasing his versatility across formats. These early experiences on the domestic scene have been crucial in shaping his bowling style and approach to different game situations.

His standout performance in the 2022 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he claimed 18 wickets in just eight games, highlighted his ability to be effective in the shortest format of the game.

With an economy rate of 6.36 in this tournament and a stellar showing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy with 17 wickets at an economy of 3.53, Kaverappa has proven his mettle as a reliable bowler under pressure.

Selected by the Punjab Kings at the IPL 2023 auction for his base price of INR 20 lakh, his retention for the IPL 2024 season was a testament to the faith the franchise places in his abilities.

With his IPL debut, Vidwath Kaverappa has taken a significant step in his cricketing career, and the cricketing fraternity will be keenly watching his progress. As he hones his skills and builds on his initial successes, he could very well be a key player for Punjab Kings and an exciting prospect for Indian cricket.
