Virtually out of playoff contention Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals lock horns in match 66 of the IPL 2023 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamshala on Friday (May 19) with the match set to start at 7:30 PM IST.
PBKS led by Shikhar Dhawan and RR led by Sanju Samson will aim to bounce back and end the season on a high following disappointing home defeats that put both teams out of the top four race. While PBKS lost to Delhi Capitals, RR lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore.
PBKS opened their season with back-to-back wins over Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals, but suffered two successive losses before going on mixed run of 4 wins and 5 defeats in the last 9 matches with their most recent result being a defeat to DC in Dharamshala.
RR, meanwhile, opened their season with a victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad followed by a defeat to PBKS, but bounced back with three successive wins before going on a terrible run of 2 wins in the last 8 matches with their most recent result being a defeat to RCB.
Both teams are on 12 points and one team will like to end the season in the middle of the table rather than the bottom. RR has a better Net Run Rate (NRR) compared to PBKS and take the sixth spot, while the Punjab-based side, who beat the Royals in the reverse fixture, are in eighth.
In the reverse fixture that took place at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati last month, PBKS rode on Shikhar Dhawan and Prabhsimran Singh fifties followed by Nathan Ellis 4-wicket haul to seal a 5-run victory.
The two sides will now clash for the second time this season at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, where several players including RR captain Sanju Samson and PBKS skipper Shikhar Dhawan, have a chance to reach milestones or break records.
