PCB to decide on Asif's drug case next week

By Staff

Karachi, July 26 : The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will take a decision next week on whether to take action against its fast bowler Mohammad Asif in a drug-related case.

Shafqat Naghmi, PCB's chief operating officer, has said that the PCB internal fact-finding committee is likely to submit its report to the board on Monday after which the PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf will announce whether any action has to be taken against Asif.

"We will not go into the details of the hearing, but basically Asif has pleaded his innocence. However, we will go through all the aspects before preparing our report," The News quoted Naghmi, as saying

Earlier, Asif appeared before a fact-finding committee and recorded his statement regarding what happened at Duabi airport that led to his 19-day detention.

"Asif spent about 90 minutes before the committee that recorded his statement on the whole issue," a spokesman for the PCB said.

Asif was detained at Dubai airport while returning from the Indian Premier League (IPL) on charges of possession of opium. He was deported by police in the Gulf emirate, who said the quantity of illegal drug found was 'insignificant.'

Last week, Asif was tested positive for a banned substance during random testing undertaken by a WADA accredited laboratory.
