PCB says Misbah just playing cricket, not promoting liquor

By Staff

Karachi, May 7 : The PCB has said that it was not contemplating any action against Pakistan fast bowler Misbah-ul Haq for representing Banglaore "Royal Challengers" team in the ongoing IPL, because he was simply "playing for a team" and not endorsing any liquor brand.

For the past few days, reports had suggested that action should be taken against Misbah as he was playing for a team owned by Indian liquor baron Vijay Mallaya, because promoting liquor was considered haram in Islam.

"We don't think any action against Misbah is required for representing (Bangalore) Royal Challengers. He is not promoting liquor or joining the company's advertising campaign. He is just playing cricket for an IPL team," The News quoted PCB Chief Operating Officer Shafqat Naghmi as saying.

He said Misbah had broken no law by representing Bangalore Royal Challengers

In the past, the PCB has discouraged its players from associating themselves with alcohol brands. But Naghmi said that Misbah cannot be stopped from playing in the IPL just because the team he is representing is owned by a liquor-producing company.

"What we can do is ask him not to appear in any commercial endorsing liquor or be a part of any other advertising campaign," he said.
