PCB Set To Add Two New Franchises by PSL 2026, What Do We Know So Far?

By MyKhel Staff

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is set to undergo a significant expansion ahead of its 2026 season, as confirmed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). With the addition of two new franchises, the league will transform into an eight-team spectacle.

The decision to expand the PSL comes as no surprise, following discussions between the PCB and existing franchise owners regarding the league's future trajectory. The upcoming 2025 season, heralded as the 'last six-team event' sets the stage for this monumental shift in the league's structure.

PCB Set To Add Two New Franchises by PSL 2026

While the process for selecting the cities to represent the new franchises is yet to commence, anticipation is already building among fans and stakeholders alike.

Since its inception, the PSL has steadily evolved, with Multan Sultans' entry in 2018 marking the only addition to the original five franchises. Now, with the prospect of two new teams joining the fold, the league is poised for unprecedented growth and competitiveness.

However, amidst the excitement of expansion, the PSL faces a pivotal moment of reckoning. The ten-year lease ownership agreements with franchise owners are set to expire in 2025, introducing an element of uncertainty regarding ownership structures. While existing owners have the right of first refusal, the potential for change looms large, adding an intriguing layer of intrigue to the league's future.

In addition to expansion, the PCB is exploring innovative strategies to enhance the PSL's global footprint. With unseasonably hot temperatures in Lahore during mid-May, the prospect of hosting the playoffs and final of PSL 2025 in the UK has gained traction.

Not only does this move alleviate concerns about weather conditions, but it also presents an opportunity to showcase the PSL on an international stage, further solidifying its status as one of the premier T20 leagues worldwide.

Moreover, hosting the tournament in the UK is seen as a cost-effective alternative to the UAE, which has traditionally served as the primary venue for PSL matches held outside Pakistan. By embracing this forward-thinking approach, the PCB aims to elevate the PSL to new heights of success and visibility, captivating audiences both at home and abroad.
