PCB mulls abolishing several of its departments to cut expenses

Lahore, Jun.4 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), in its bid to pull itself out of the financial crisis, is planning to downsize the number of departments working under its umbrella.

According to The Nation, the PCB is likely to abolish several departments to cut down expenses.

Sources said it wanted to chop employees, but is undecided over which type of employees it should send packing, the senior staff or the lower ones.

So, in order to avoid any legal hassles and political pressure, the board has decided to do away with several of its units.

The PCB's Chief Operating Officer (COO) Saleem Altaf has said that the final decision in this regard would be taken with the general council's consent.

"The general council has to approve the new plan for it to be implemented. The general council is due to meet soon to discuss some important issues," Altaf said.

Earlier, it was reported that the PCB is mulling to sack 250 of its employees out of the 544 employed by it at present to cut expenses and restructure the organization.

"At present we have around 544 employees in the board and the idea is to cut the expenses of the board which means we will be laying off some employees," Altaf had said.

It almost seems to imply that almost half of the PCB staff is redundant, and had no work.

The restructuring comes after Sports Minister Aftab Shah Jillani complained to PCB's patron President Asif Ali Zardari, that the board's chairman Ijaz Butt was not restructuring it despite being instructed to do so by higher authorities. (ANI)
