India’s rising star Pratika Rawal etched her name in the history books with a dazzling performance against South Africa in the ongoing Women’s ODI Tri-Nation Series in Colombo.
The 24-year-old opener not only laid the foundation for India’s innings with a sublime 78 but also shattered long-standing records, becoming the fastest woman to reach 500 ODI runs. Her exploits have now placed her among the most elite names in women’s cricket.

Rawal achieved the milestone in just her eighth ODI innings, eclipsing the previous record held by former England captain Charlotte Edwards, who got there in nine innings. The Indian batter’s consistency and temperament have been the cornerstones of her stellar start to international cricket, having debuted just four months ago in December 2024 against the West Indies in Vadodara.
Coming into the match, Rawal needed only six runs to break Edwards’ record. She did so in style, bringing up her half-century with a six — her fifth consecutive fifty-plus score in ODIs. This remarkable streak of form now sees her equal a record held by Indian legend Mithali Raj for the most consecutive fifty-plus scores by an Indian woman in ODIs.
Rawal’s record-breaking run began with an 89 against Ireland in Rajkot earlier this year. She followed it up with scores of 67 and a breathtaking 154 — her highest score yet. Her unbeaten 50 against Sri Lanka in a rain-hit opener of the tri-series kept the streak alive, setting the stage for her latest 78-run knock against South Africa.
Opening the innings alongside Smriti Mandhana, Rawal looked composed and aggressive in equal measure. The duo put on an 83-run stand before Mandhana fell for 36. Rawal carried on with elegant strokeplay, peppering the off-side and punishing anything short, until she was dismissed by South African spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba.
Despite missing out on a second ODI century, Rawal's performance ensured a strong platform for the middle order. India will be hoping to ride her form deep into the tournament as they eye a spot in the final.
At just 24, and with six fifty-plus scores including a century in her first eight ODIs, Pratika Rawal is not just making headlines — she’s building a legacy.
