Once regarded as a prodigious talent in Indian cricket, Prithvi Shaw finds himself at a crossroads in his career.
The 25-year-old batter, who debuted for India in Test cricket with a sparkling century, has been left out of Mumbai's squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which begins on December 21 in Ahmedabad.

This decision follows a season riddled with disappointments, including fitness concerns, disciplinary issues, and a lackluster performance in domestic tournaments.
Shaw's journey in the 2023-24 season has been far from ideal. He was dropped midway through the Ranji Trophy on fitness and disciplinary grounds and, despite making a comeback for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), failed to make a significant impact. Mumbai went on to win the T20 tournament, but Shaw's contributions were modest, with a handful of starts that never translated into substantial innings.
Adding to his woes, Shaw went unsold in the IPL auction in November, a stark contrast to his earlier years as a sought-after young talent in the league.
In the wake of his exclusion, Shaw took to social media to vent his feelings. Sharing an Instagram story, he wrote: "Tell me God, what more do I have to see? If 65 innings, 3399 runs at an average of 55.7 with a strike rate of 126 (in Vijay Hazare), I'm not good enough. But I will keep my faith in you and, hopefully, people still believe in me, because I will come back for sure. Om Sai Ram."
Shaw's post reflects the emotional toll of his recent setbacks, with the batter seemingly struggling to comprehend the repeated snubs despite his impressive record in List A cricket.
Mumbai teammate Shreyas Iyer, who will lead the side in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, has previously spoken about Shaw's potential, stating that "the sky is the limit for him if he works on his work ethics." Similarly, Ajinkya Rahane, another senior Mumbai cricketer, has expressed faith in Shaw's abilities, urging him to focus on consistency and discipline.
Mumbai will rely on a mix of experienced players and young talents as they begin their campaign against Karnataka. Shreyas Iyer will lead a side featuring stalwarts like Suryakumar Yadav, all-rounder Shivam Dube, and pacer Shardul Thakur. Spinner Shams Mulani, who had been a mainstay in Mumbai's lineup, has also been excluded alongside Shaw.
Full Squad: Shreyas Iyer (Captain), Ayush Mhatre, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Jay Bista, Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Suryansh Shedge, Siddhesh Lad, Hardik Tamore, Prasad Pawar (WK), Atharva Ankolekar, Tanush Kotian, Shardul Thakur, Royston Dias, Juned Khan, Harsh Tanna, Vinayak Bhor.
Shaw's career trajectory serves as a cautionary tale of how talent alone cannot sustain a long-term career at the highest levels of cricket. While his statistics in domestic cricket remain enviable, concerns around fitness, discipline, and consistency have cast a shadow on his potential.
