Quetta Gladiators vs Peshawar Zalmi, PSL 2024: A refurbished Quetta Gladiators started their Pakistan Super League campaign with a 16-run win over title contenders Peshawar Zalmi at the Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore on Sunday (February 18).

Jason Roy led Quetta to 206 for 5 with a brisk 75 runs off 48 balls, and left-hander Saud Shakeel, who had to wait 33 games for his PSL debut, hit an equally impressive 74 off 47. Peshawar had a quick start to the chase with 90 runs off 51 balls thanks to Babar Azam (68) and Saim Ayub (42), but in the second half of the innings, their pursuit faltered and they were eventually restricted to 190-6.

QG vs PZ, PSL 2024: Who Said What

Rilee Rossouw | Quetta Gladiators captain: "It's tough work out there. Very nice to have my first win (as captain) under the belt. With the bowling line-up we have, I thought it was a very defendable total. The wicket didn't play any worse in the second half.

"The bowlers did a really good job. (On Abrar ) His mystery, he's our X-factor. Even Akeal bowled two serious overs. Good positive to have them in our line-up. Our death bowling, they have their plans.

"We'll look to improve every day. We are happy with how we are playing. (On Shane Watson) His experience, how he's played, he's putting that into Quetta Gladiators. He's brought in a structure and the guys have bought into that."

Saud Shakeel | Player of the Match: "I have been waiting for this opportunity. Have been working hard on my game. I am pretty happy that it went well. Everything happens for a good reason, playing with Roy, it gives me the cushion. Enjoying batting with him. I have been given the platform to express myself."

Babar Azam | Peshawar Zalmi captain: "That (Saim Ayub) run-out, we were building a nice partnership, unfortunately that was my mistake, turned out to be a turning point. Chasing 200+, the first six overs were important. We wanted to be positive. Quetta were on the back foot. But we conceded 10-20 runs too many. We weren't up to the mark in the first six overs with the ball. We tried our best with the bat, the middle-order didn't perform as well as we would have liked."

Mohammad Amir: "The conditions weren't easy, the way Roy and Saud Shakeel batted was really good. Makes bowlers' job whenever you score 200. It's good that we won the first game. I always back my process, I come with a clear mind.
"(On Shakeel) It's his debut game for Quetta. There was moisture on the pitch, it was a crucial game for him, all credit to him. I had a great time with Karachi. Now, I am playing for Quetta, hope I perform well."
