PSL 2025: Islamabab United Crush Lahore Qalandars to Launch Title Defence in Tournament Opener, Jason Holder, Colin Munro Shine in Victory

PSL 2025: Islamabad United kicked off their title defence in the Pakistan Super League 2025 with a commanding eight-wicket win over Lahore Qalandars at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

Chasing a modest 140, the defending champions romped home with 14 balls to spare, courtesy of a fluent half-century from Colin Munro and a composed hand from Salman Ali Agha.

Earlier, Lahore's innings never quite got going despite a standout knock of 66 off 38 balls from Abdullah Shafique. The Qalandars kept losing wickets at regular intervals, struggling to build partnerships.

Jason Holder was the pick of the bowlers with 4 wickets, including two in two deliveries that derailed Lahore's momentum in the middle overs. Skipper Shadab Khan wrapped up the innings clinically, finishing with 3 scalps, including the final dismissal of Haris Rauf via a sharp stumping.

Set 140 for victory, Islamabad United lost Andries Gous early, bowled by Asif Afridi while attempting a wild heave. But Colin Munro's assured presence at the crease calmed any nerves. The left-hander soaked up the pressure early and counterattacked with a flurry of boundaries, notably taking on Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf.

Sahibzada Farhan supported briefly with a 24-ball 25 before falling to a smart catch by Sikandar Raza. That brought Salman Ali Agha to the crease, who survived an early scare when Haris Rauf dropped a sitter at deep mid-wicket - a moment that proved costly for Lahore.

From there, it was a procession. Agha played with elegance and intent, hammering a six over long leg off David Wiese and using the gaps smartly. Munro, at the other end, brought up his 50 in 35 balls and then shifted gears, slamming Afridi for a majestic six and a boundary to crush any remaining hope for the Qalandars.

Their unbroken 80-run stand sealed the win in style, with Agha smashing a four over cover in the 18th over to close the game. Munro remained unbeaten on 59, and Agha on 41, as United finished at 143/2 in 17.4 overs.

It was a dominant display from Islamabad - one that sends a strong message to the rest of the league. Lahore, on the other hand, will rue missed chances and lack of depth with the bat beyond Shafique.
