PSL 2026: Daryl Mitchell Confronts Usman Tariq Over ‘Pause’ Action, Umpires Step In
Daryl Mitchell’s clash with Usman Tariq’s bowling style has revived questions about the Pakistan spinner’s action. Mitchell objected to the long pause before release, twice backing away from the crease, before umpires stepped in and instructed play to carry on.
The incident took place during the Pakistan Super League match between Quetta Gladiators and Rawalpindi Pindiz. Mitchell, representing Pindiz, faced Tariq in the ninth over and initially paddle swept the first ball, yet soon appeared frustrated by the extended delay in Tariq’s delivery stride.

Mitchell vs Tariq controversy and match outcome
Mitchell repeatedly gestured towards Tariq mid-run-up, highlighting the pause that interrupts the bowling rhythm. After a brief discussion with the New Zealand batter, the umpires allowed Tariq to continue unchanged. Later in the innings, Tariq dismissed Mitchell with a caught-and-bowled, during Pindiz’s heavy 61-run defeat in Karachi.
Tariq's action controversy and bowling style
Usman Tariq’s method has already drawn scrutiny because of a stop-start approach to the crease. Tariq runs in normally, then halts for a noticeable moment at the point of release, finally dropping low on the knees to send the ball down. Match officials have reported Tariq for a suspect action twice, yet cleared Tariq both times.
Mitchell’s choice to step away is linked to guidance earlier from Ravichandran Ashwin, who addressed similar situations during the T20 World Cup this year. Ashwin suggested that batters should walk away and force umpires to signal a dead ball if delays feel unreasonable.
Ashwin during the T20 World Cup 2026 claimed this tactic shifts responsibility for time-wasting towards the bowler and umpire, while denying Tariq any mental edge from disturbing a batter’s timing. The Mitchell vs Tariq controversy now adds another layer to ongoing discussions about fair play and bowling actions.
