The Pakistan Super League's operational decisions during the 2026 season have come under renewed scrutiny after Islamabad United owner Ali Naqvi offered an explanation that appeared to contradict earlier remarks made by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi. The controversy centres on why matches were restricted to limited venues and played without crowds in several locations.

Earlier, the PCB had cited a nationwide fuel shortage as the primary reason behind reduced attendance and logistical adjustments across venues. PSL 2026 was scaled down from six venues to just two - Lahore and Karachi - with the schedule revised to ensure continuity of the tournament despite external challenges.

PSL Franchise Owner Suggests Security Considerations Were Key

Ali Naqvi, however, presented a different perspective, linking the decision to broader national responsibilities. In a statement shared on social media, he suggested that security requirements connected to diplomatic developments influenced the operational changes.

According to his remarks, Islamabad was prioritised for sensitive diplomatic activity, which required significant security deployment and logistical flexibility. He added that allowing large crowds across multiple cities could have stretched security resources, prompting authorities to limit public attendance and venue usage.

This explanation differed from the earlier fuel-shortage narrative, raising questions about the exact factors behind the league's revised planning.

PSL Adjustments Included Venue Reductions and Ceremony Changes

The revised schedule saw PSL 2026 matches restricted to Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium and venues in Karachi, while games originally planned in cities such as Rawalpindi and Peshawar were relocated. The league's opening ceremony in Lahore was also cancelled amid regional tensions linked to geopolitical developments.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi had earlier stated that the tournament needed to proceed as scheduled to maintain the credibility of the league, noting that there was no available window to reschedule the season later in the calendar.

He also issued an apology to fans in Peshawar, where PSL matches were expected to be hosted for the first time before the revised schedule was implemented.
