Just hours before the highly-anticipated curtain-raiser of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025, chaos and concern swept through the capital city as a fire broke out at the luxurious Serena Hotel in Islamabad — the official accommodation for players and staff of participating PSL teams.
The shocking incident, which unfolded on Friday afternoon, set social media ablaze as spine-chilling visuals of the hotel engulfed in thick smoke went viral online.

The blaze erupted on the sixth floor of the hotel, reportedly from the generator room. With panic and concern spreading rapidly, prompt intervention by the local authorities helped contain the situation. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported, and all guests, including the PSL cricketers and support staff, were safely evacuated.
The PSL 2025, now in its 10th edition, was set to kick off on Friday evening with a blockbuster clash between defending champions Islamabad United and the Shaheen Afridi-led Lahore Qalandars at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. But before the players could even leave for the stadium, drama had already struck the tournament in an unexpected fashion.
According to eyewitnesses and officials, a fire broke out in the generator room on the top floor of the five-star hotel. In no time, dark smoke billowed into the Islamabad sky, blanketing the upper floors and triggering an immediate emergency response.
“The fire brigade teams launched their operation to extinguish the fire promptly,” said PSL CEO Salman Naseer, speaking to Samaa TV. “None of the players or franchises faced any difficulties. The fire was extinguished on time. It did not spread to the interior of the hotel.”
Emergency services were swift in their response. According to Zafar Iqbal, Director of Emergency at the Capital Development Authority (CDA), “Six firefighting vehicles and 50 firefighters participated in the operation to extinguish the fire. The fire was extinguished within half an hour.”
The Islamabad district administration was also quick to confirm that the incident was not the result of foul play. Officials clarified that the fire was structural in nature, ruling out any links to terrorism — a much-needed assurance amidst rising safety concerns.
While the fire did create temporary traffic snarls in the surrounding areas due to roadblocks and the hotel’s evacuation, the situation was brought under control without any major disruption to the tournament’s schedule.
As visuals of the Serena Hotel surrounded by smoke went viral, fans and cricket enthusiasts from around the world flooded social media platforms with concern for the safety of the players and hotel guests. The hashtag #PSL10 began trending within minutes, with users sharing their prayers and seeking updates from official channels.
Thankfully, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was quick to release a statement confirming that all players, coaching staff, and hotel personnel were safe. There was also no damage reported to any team gear or match essentials, allowing the league to proceed as planned.
As the evening approaches and the flames settle, attention now turns to the field — where defending champions Islamabad United, captained by the ever-agile Shadab Khan, will face arch-rivals Lahore Qalandars. The season opener promises high-octane action under the lights at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, with the match slated for a 9:00 PM IST start.
Both teams come into PSL 2025 with sky-high expectations. Islamabad United, known for their balanced line-up and sharp strategy, will look to kick off their title defence in style. Meanwhile, Lahore Qalandars, under the fiery leadership of Shaheen Afridi, are eyeing redemption after falling short in the previous edition.
