The inaugural Women's Premier League auction has sparked a social media conversation around the salaries of the WPL and the Pakistan men's T20 league - Pakistan Super League (PSL).
With Mandhana fetching the highest bucks at the WPL auction 2023, netizens mocked the PSL by comparing the WPL expensive buy to the Pakistan skipper Babar Azam.
While Mandhana was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for a whopping INR 3.4 Crores, Babar earns around INR 1.2 Crore in the PSL at his franchise Peshawar Zalmi.
Apart from Mandhana, RCB went on to break the bank for Australia all-rounder Ellyse Perry as they bought her at a sum of INR 1.7 Crores. Mumbai Indians splashed the cash for England's Nat Sciver Brunt, while Gujarat Giants spent big on Australia's Ash Gardner.
Beth Mooney, Shafali Varma, Deepti Sharma and Jemimah Rodrigues also received bids over INR 2 Crore, making the auctions for the inaugural edition of the WPL a historic event.
Some fans, however, did not shy away from comparing the price tags with PSL. Earlier, there were comparisons of IPL salaries and PSL, but now fans have compared the numbers players earn in PSL earn compared to the women's event.
The money may be very high in WPL, but it's still not a fair comparison as there is no auction process in the Pakistan Super League, and the players get picked via a draft based on different categories.
The platinum category is the highest with the base salary of this category being $130,000 going up to $170,000 (approximately INR 1.4 crores).
Apart from Babar, 22 more players including Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Rizwan are in the platinum category. In WPL, at least 17 players fetched INR 1.4 Crore or more.
The rest of the categories in PSL draft are Diamond: $60,000-$85,000 (INR 50-70 Lakhs), Gold: $40,000-$50,000 (INR 33-41 Lakhs) and Silver: up to $25,000 (INR 20 Lakhs). There is also a Supplementary category in which players are paid based on the number of matches played.
