Former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth has stirred debate ahead of IPL 2026 after questioning Rajasthan Royals' decision to appoint Riyan Parag as captain, hinting that the young all-rounder may have received preferential backing within the franchise.
Parag was named Rajasthan Royals' full-time captain following major squad changes ahead of the new season, including the departure of Sanju Samson in a high-profile trade. The decision surprised some observers, with several experienced players available within the squad.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth shared his candid views on Parag's appointment, suggesting that the move raised questions about the selection process.
Srikkanth indicated that Parag's elevation to captaincy may not have been based purely on recent performances.
"Everyone knows how he became the captain. That is their decision but he is treated like the king there. Parag didn't have a good season last year, but the year before last, he did brilliantly. Last year, he didn't do anything deadly," claimed Srikkanth.
His remarks come despite Parag being a long-term member of the Rajasthan Royals setup, having been picked as a teenager in IPL 2017 and remaining with the franchise through multiple seasons.
While Parag showed promise in earlier campaigns, questions around consistency have often followed him, making his appointment one of the more talked-about decisions ahead of IPL 2026.
Parag previously led Rajasthan Royals in eight matches last season when Samson was unavailable due to injury, although the team managed only two wins during that stretch.
Despite the mixed results, the franchise opted to back Parag over other potential leadership candidates, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, and experienced all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.
With 1566 runs from 84 matches for Rajasthan Royals, including seven half-centuries, Parag remains one of the franchise's long-serving players. His aggressive batting approach has been viewed as one of the strengths he brings into leadership.
While critical of the captaincy decision, Srikkanth acknowledged that Rajasthan Royals still possess the potential to produce strong performances during the tournament.
"It's a decent side. They have the potential to upset sides. But they are also a side that will self-destruct. Yet, if two in their top five click, they will smash the opposition."
He further added that while the team has strengths in batting, consistency could determine their fate.
"So they are a good side but not a dangerous one. They are not a championship-winning side. They are 50-50 even for playoff qualification," remarked Srikkanth.
With IPL 2026 approaching, Rajasthan Royals' decision to back Riyan Parag as captain is likely to remain under scrutiny as the young leader prepares to guide the team through a high-pressure season.
