Quetta Gladiators begin their Pakistan Super League 2024 campaign with a new hope as they face Babar Azam's Peshawar Zalmi in Match 2 of the season at the Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore on Sunday (February 18).
After failing to move up the ladder the previous year, both teams will be looking to start the competition on a high note. Except the few international regulars, both teams are inexperienced with the circumstances in Lahore.
While they possess a strong batting lineup, Peshawar Zalmi's bowling performance is lacking. For the second year in a row, Babar will captain the team and be in charge of arranging their batting lineup. Zalmi will be depending on left-arm wrist spinner Noor Ahmad and pacer Naveen-ul-Haq of Afghanistan to inflict some of the early damage.
The team management will rely on big hitter Rovman Powell of the West Indies T20I captain to step it up late in the innings. Alongside captain Babar Azam, young wicketkeeper Mohammad Haris can provide fire to the beginning.
Under the direction of South African player Rilee Rossouw, the Quetta Gladiators will usher in a new era. Sarfaraz Ahmed's eight years as the team captain came to an unexpected end when the captaincy change was made public just a few days before the competition began.
The PSL champions of 2019 are proud to have Muhammad Hasnain and Muhammad Wasim as great pacers. The invaluable experience of Mohammad Amir and Sohail Khan lends flavor to this sector. The spin unit will include youthful Abrar Ahmed, Usman Qadir, and Akeal Hosein. While Sherfane Rutherford, an all-round bowler for the West Indies, can lead the charge in this situation and Sarfaraz is the backup, Quetta lacks a true power hitter in their lineup.
