Quinton de Kock breaks Adam Gilchrist's 16-year-old World Cup record, MS Dhoni milestone saved by a whisker

Quinton de Kock looks like a man on mission in the World Cup 2023. The 30-year-old already made the big announcement of retiring from ODI cricket after South Africa campaign at the World Cup 2023. The southpaw brought up his third hundred in the ongoing ICC marquee event on Tuesday.

The opener smashed 174 runs off 140 balls against Bangladesh at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to create a string of records. The biggest of them was going past Adam Gilchrist's 149 in the 2007 final against Sri Lanka, to become the wicketkeeper-batter to score most runs in a World Cup innings.

Had de Kock scored 10 more runs, he would have gone past MS Dhoni's record of most runs by a wicketkeeper-batter in ODI cricket history. He missed out on an opportunity to break the record for the second time in his career. Earlier, he had scored 178 against Australia at Centurion in 2016.

The 174 runs scored against Bangladesh is also the second-highest score by a South African at the World Cup. Fary Kirsten scored unbeaten 188 against the UAE in the 1996 edition. De Kock also has three 150-plus ODI scores - most by a wicketkeeper-batter. Only Hashim Amla has more 150-plus scores (4) than de Kock among South Africa batters.

Quinton de Kock is now second on the list of wicketkeeper-batters with most hundreds in World Cups. He is also just a hundred short of equalling AB de Villiers' tally of most hundreds (4) by a South Africa batter in ODI World Cups. The Johannesburg-born star is also the youngest from South Africa to reach 20 ODI hundreds.

The whirlwind hundred fired South Africa to 382/5 in 50 overs against Bangladesh. The side had scored 399/7 in their last match against England at the same venue. A win against Bangladesh will be South Africa's fourth in five matches and they will pip New Zealand to second in the ten-team ODI World Cup points table. India are sitting at the top with five wins in as many matches.
