Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru began their IPL 2026 title defence in style with a commanding six-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad, but much of the spotlight remained firmly on Virat Kohli and his trademark intensity.
Speaking on JioHotstar's 'Google Search AI Mode Match Centre Live', former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin praised Kohli's relentless approach, even deep into his career.

"I find him quite bizarre at this age. I tell him this during our chats now and then," Ashwin said. "He was batting on 40-odd, there was a partnership going on, and RCB were coasting. He ran through for the first single and was already looking for a second. That shows the enthusiasm he still brings to the game."
Ashwin noted that Kohli's approach continues to set the tone for the rest of the side.
"He walks the talk. It's almost like he's putting on a show for people to see how the game should be played - play it hard and play it the way it's meant to be played. If this is the way RCB are going to bat, Virat just needs to bat the full 20 overs," he added.
RCB's victory was also shaped by a decisive bowling performance from debutant Jacob Duffy, who made an immediate impact in the powerplay.
Ashwin revealed he had backed the signing even during the auction phase.
"When Jacob Duffy was picked, I said it was an amazing pick to replace Josh Hazlewood. He's in the prime of his career and knows exactly what he is doing," Ashwin explained.
"What stood out was his tactical awareness. After being hit early, he corrected his length and bowled in very good areas. He was probably the reason the scoring was kept in check."
With both Kohli's batting intensity and Duffy's disciplined bowling on display, RCB appeared tactically sharper and better prepared, a combination that could prove crucial as they attempt to defend their IPL crown.
