R Sridhar, the former fielding fielding coach of India, has been appointed as the new assistant coach of Afghanistan cricket team. The appointment comes ahead of Afghanistan's two big assignments in September. He will work alongside Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott.
Afghanistan are scheduled to play a historic one-off Test against New Zealand in India's Greater Noida from September 9. They will then fly to the UAE, where South Africa will clash against them for a three-match ODI series.

"54 year-old Sridhar has played 35 first class and 15 List A matches for India in domestic cricket. He has been India’s national team Fielding Coach in more than 300 international matches including two ICC ODI and two T20I world cups. He has also served Kings XI Punjab as Spin Bowling Coach from 2014 to 2017 in India Premier League." Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) said in their statement.
"Sridhar is Level-3 certified coach who has served Indian U19 national team as Assistant Coach and Spin Bowling Coach too. From 2008 to 2014, Sridhar served India’s National Cricket Academy as an assistant fielding and spin bowling coach," it added.
Afghanistan are hoping for a long association with the former Hyderabad cricketer, who scored 574 runs and picked 91 wickets with his left-arm bowling in first-class cricket.
"It is worth mentioning that the Afghanistan Cricket Board has appointed Sridhar as the assistant coach for the one-off Test against New Zealand and the 3-match ODI series against South Africa. The Afghanistan Cricket Board wish Sridhar fills the role effectively and hope to have long term contract with him in the future," ACB said.
