'Rahul Dravid Deserves Bharat Ratna,' Suggests Sunil Gavaskar; Fans Back Him

In a stirring call for recognition, legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar has urged the Indian government to bestow the Bharat Ratna upon Rahul Dravid. Gavaskar’s plea comes on the heels of Dravid’s remarkable tenure as the head coach of the Indian cricket team, culminating in a T20 World Cup victory in the West Indies in 2024.

Under Dravid's guidance, India also achieved notable successes, including reaching the finals of the 2023 Men's ODI World Cup and the 2023 World Test Championship and winning the Asia Cup the same year.

Rahul Dravid Deserves Bharat Ratna Says Sunil Gavaskar Fans Back Him

In his column for Mid-Day, Gavaskar stressed Dravid's illustrious career both as a player and coach. Dravid, who scored an astounding 24,177 runs in international cricket, was not only a phenomenal batsman but also a revered captain.

His leadership saw India clinch series victories in challenging overseas tours, including the West Indies and England. "Great player and captain of the country with famous away series wins... a wonderful talent groomer in his earlier role," wrote Gavaskar, highlighting Dravid’s multifaceted contributions to Indian cricket.

Dravid’s coaching career has been equally commendable. Prior to his stint with the senior team, he successfully helmed the National Cricket Academy and led the India U19 team to a World Cup victory in 2018. Gavaskar lauded Dravid's selfless approach, noting his willingness to adapt to any role for the team's benefit during his playing days.

This selflessness, Gavaskar argued, has been a cornerstone of Dravid’s coaching philosophy, fostering a team-oriented attitude that has led to India's recent successes. "That’s the team-oriented attitude that he inculcated in the team," Gavaskar noted.

Despite the existence of the Dronacharya Award, which honours excellence in coaching, Gavaskar believes Dravid's impact transcends conventional accolades. Dravid’s achievements, according to Gavaskar, have united and brought joy to the entire nation, surpassing political and social boundaries. "Dravid’s achievements have given joy across all party lines and across caste, creed, communities and brought untold happiness to the whole country," he wrote.

Fans have enthusiastically backed Gavaskar's call for honouring Dravid with the Bharat Ratna. Social media is abuzz with support, as cricket enthusiasts express their agreement with Gavaskar’s sentiments.

"Couldn't agree more with Sunil Gavaskar! Rahul Dravid deserves the Bharat Ratna for his unparalleled contribution to Indian cricket," tweeted a user named @vishalkmumbai.

Echoing similar sentiments, @Rahul_bill wrote, "Rahul Dravid's achievements as both a player and coach are truly remarkable. The Bharat Ratna is a fitting tribute." Another fan, @K44982949Kumar, added, "Sunil Gavaskar has hit the nail on the head. Dravid’s legacy in Indian cricket is unparalleled."

Gavaskar passionately argued that Dravid’s contributions deserve the highest civilian honour, stating, "It would be apt if the Government of India honours him with the Bharat Ratna, for that's what he has truly been."

He called upon the nation to support this recognition, emphasizing the significance of Dravid's legacy in Indian cricket. "C'mon everybody, please join me in asking the Government to recognize one of the greatest sons of India. Bharat Ratna, Rahul Sharad Dravid. Sounds terrific, doesn't it?" Gavaskar concluded.

As the cricketing world celebrates India’s latest triumphs, Gavaskar’s compelling endorsement of Rahul Dravid for the Bharat Ratna resonates deeply, encapsulating the gratitude and admiration of millions of cricket fans across the country.
