Rahul Dravid's head coach tenure to end after World Cup 2023: Five ex-India cricketers who can replace him

Rahul Dravid's tenure as the head coach of the Indian men's cricket team will end with the World Cup 2023. The 50-year-old will have the option of reapplying but uncertainty looms.

The high-profile job involves a lot of travelling and spending time away from the family. The pressure of expectation is an add on. Rahul Dravid could opt against reapplying and instead return back to coaching one of the IPL teams.

VVS Laxman is reportedly set to be the coach of the Indian cricket team which will play against Australia in a 5-T20I series immediately after the World Cup 2023. However, that again would be a temporary arrangement.

The BCCI can soon be on the hunt for a new head coach for the men's cricket team. Chances of appointment of a foreign coach can be ruled out once again. Here are the top five former India cricketers who can succeed Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the senior India men's cricket team.

Who will replace Rahul Dravid as India coach?

VVS Laxman: Rahul Dravid was the head of NCA just before being named as the head coach of the Indian cricket team. VVS Laxman is the current NCA head and history could see it repeating itself. Laxman has filled in for Dravid several times. He also travelled with the Indian T20I team which won the Asian Games gold medal in China recently. Laxman could surely be approached for the permanent role.

Virender Sehwag: The former India opener was earlier approached for the role once when Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble's relation as a captain-coach duo had hit rock bottom. Kohli had himself requested Sehwag to take over after the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. However, things could not materialise. Sehwag had reportedly asked for his choice of other support staff.

Anil Kumble: With Virat Kohli no more the captain of the team, Anil Kumble can also emerge as one of the candidates. The appointment of the former India captain and coach will make a lot of headlines.

Zaheer Khan: The former India pacer can be a decent choice considering his vast experience. He has been associated with the Mumbai Indians for the longest duration and has the required experience to handle a team.

He was promoted as the Global Head of Cricket Development at Mumbai Indians in September last year. Taking the India role will mean that Zaheer would have to let go of the MI job. The same reduces the chances of Zaheer Khan's appointment as India coach magnificently.

Ashish Nehra: The former India pacer has made a name for himself in the coaching world by guiding Gujarat Titans (GT) to an IPL title win in their maiden attempt. The team qualified for the mega final in their second season as well.

Nehra has received praises from all quarters for his splendid job at GT which is led by Hardik Pandya - the current India T20I captain and vice-captain in the ODIs. If Hardik is handed full-time white-ball captaincy, the GT captain-coach duo can see them working together in Indian outfit as well.
