Ranji Trophy: Haryana captain Virender Sehwag scores 92 on opening day

Pune, Oct 1: Virender Sehwag began his new journey with Haryana team in the Ranji Trophy by scoring a 129-ball 92 against Maharashtra on the opening day of the new season on Thursday.

The 36-year-old Sehwag, who entertained the crowds all over the world with his dazzling stroke-play at the international level for 14 years, proved he still has lot of cricket left in him.

The right-hander had made the switch from Delhi to Haryana before the start of Ranji Trophy season. And having been handed the responsibility of captaining the side, Sehwag made a memorable start.

The 2015-16 season of India's premier first-class tournament began today (October 1) at various venues.

At the MCA Cricket Stadium in Gahunje, outskirts of Pune, Sehwag walked out to bat as early as in the 2nd over. He did not open the batting after winning the toss.

Sehwag batted at number 3 with his team in early trouble at 5/1 in 1 over. He helped Haryana recover from that early setback as he hit 15 boundaries on way to his 129-ball 92. When Sehwag was dismissed, Haryana were 156/4 in 45.1 overs.

Many of his fans were expecting to see a hundred from the "Nawab of Najafgarh" but it was not to be. He was bowled by Shrikant Mundhe.

He might have missed his 42nd first-class century but Sehwag has started the new season of Ranji Trophy with a new side, with a bang. For him and Haryana, it is a good sign.
