Ranji Trophy: Shreyas Iyer dismissal sparks controversy as Ajinkya Rahane argues with umpire

By MyKhel Staff

Day 2 of the Ranji Trophy clash between Mumbai and Jammu & Kashmir at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy in Mumbai witnessed high drama when Shreyas Iyer was controversially dismissed.

Iyer was adjudged caught behind off J&K pacer Auqib Nabi Dar, with wicketkeeper Kanhaiya Wadhawan claiming the catch. Unhappy with the decision, Iyer engaged in a lengthy discussion with the umpire, disputing the validity of the catch.

Shreyas Iyer controversy Ajinkya Rahane umpire

Ajinkya Rahane, standing at the non-striker's end, joined Iyer in questioning the decision, backing his teammate. The duo challenged whether the catch was completed cleanly, but despite their protests, the umpire's decision stood, and Iyer was sent back to the pavilion after scoring 17 runs.

The incident highlighted the intensity of the match, with tempers flaring on both sides. Mumbai's struggles on a challenging green-top wicket further compounded the situation. Earlier in the first innings, Mumbai was bowled out for a mere 120 runs, with J&K gaining a lead after reaching 206 in their innings.

Mumbai's batting lineup continued to falter in the second innings, with senior players like Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal failing to convert starts. Sharma managed 28 runs, while Jaiswal contributed 26, leaving the team in a precarious position against a determined J&K bowling attack.

The decision to bat first on a green-top pitch has proved costly for Mumbai, as the wicket continues to favor the bowlers. As the game approaches a critical juncture, Mumbai has crossed the 170-run mark in their second innings, with every run proving vital.

The controversial dismissal of Iyer has added drama to an already intense contest, raising questions about umpiring decisions and further fueling the competitive spirit of the Ranji Trophy.
